Disney confirms unexpected Coco sequel – here’s what’s been revealed
Oscar-winning movie Coco is getting a surprise sequel, but fans better be prepared for a long wait.
2017 saw the debut of a critically praised movie, set in Mexico, that tells the story of 12-year-old Miguel, an ambitious musician. This boy is transported to the realm of the deceased, where he endeavors to lift the centuries-old prohibition on music that his family enforced.
Indeed, the CEO of Disney and Pixar, Bob Iger, has verified that a sequel to the beloved film “Coco” is indeed in development. However, you’ll need to exercise some patience as its release isn’t scheduled until the year 2029.

During The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Iger stated that although the movie is still in its early development, we can expect it to be brimming with humor, emotion, and excitement.
“And we can’t wait to share more soon.”
The initial film earned acclaim for its authentic representation of Mexican traditions and its deeply moving, heartfelt narrative.
This production boasted a multi-talented ensemble, many of whom are of Mexican heritage, such as Gael García Bernal, Alanna Ubach, and Ana Ofelia Murguía.
In the latest series “Poker Face,” where Benjamin Bratt made an appearance, he provided the voice for a character modeled after renowned musician Ernesto de la Cruz – a hero admired by Miguel. Meanwhile, the main character was portrayed by young actor Anthony Gonzalez.
As a devoted admirer, I can share that back in 2017, Darla K Anderson, the producer of the enchanting film “Coco”, revealed to Digital Spy their compelling reason for naming the movie after Miguel’s great-grandmother. This cherished character was beautifully brought to life by the talented actress Murguía, who sadly passed away in 2023.
We consistently found ourselves drawn to the name ‘Coco’. It has a touch of mystery, warmth, and versatility, but what really appealed to us was its connection to the family’s matriarch, who is honored across generations and serves as a unifying force,” Anderson explained.
“We really hung on to that.”
Coco is available to stream on Disney+. A sequel has been confirmed and is set for a 2029 release.
