Disney has canceled its upcoming live-action version of . Carlos López Estrada, who was scheduled to direct the film, shared the news during a question-and-answer session on Reddit.
“Unfortunately, it’s over,” Estrada explained. “I’m disappointed because I really believed it had something unique and special going for it. We had developed some truly amazing music for the project.”
Despite the project’s current status, Estrada is still very passionate about it and often thinks about revisiting the idea for a new movie. He mentioned he frequently imagines creating it independently with a fresh cast of characters.
Kari Granlund is the writer for this upcoming film, which will combine live-action footage with computer animation. Granlund also wrote the 2019 remake of The Lady and the Tramp, released directly on streaming platforms.
A Live-Action Remake of Disney’s Robin Hood May Have Been a Hard Sell
Estrada didn’t say why Disney decided to scrap the live-action Robin Hood remake. This is surprising, considering Disney is still actively trying to recreate its animated hits with live-action films.
The unique aspect of the planned Robin Hood movie was that all the characters were animals with human characteristics. This meant, despite being intended as a live-action film, it would have relied heavily on computer-generated imagery (CGI). Achieving the same charismatic portrayal of Robin Hood, which made the original animated film so beloved, in a realistic live-action format would have been incredibly difficult, and risked looking unnatural or unsettling.
One possibility is that Disney might have been planning a Robin Hood remake primarily for streaming on Disney+, similar to what they did with The Lady and the Tramp. However, Disney’s strategy has changed since then, and they are now more focused on releasing films in theaters.
Last year, we acknowledged that our push to quickly fill Disney+ with content led us to ask for a high volume of work from our creative teams, like Marvel. This intense pace seemed to cause creative burnout. We’ve since realized that simply having a lot of content doesn’t guarantee it will be good.
The 1973 Robin Hood is available to stream on Disney+ in all of its original animated glory.
