Disney boss says Doctor Who “really good fit” in response to co-production

As a seasoned gamer and long-time Whovian, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about Disney’s involvement with Doctor Who. Growing up, the TARDIS was my passport to infinite adventures, and it’s bittersweet to see it land in the hands of another cosmic powerhouse.

According to Disney, “Doctor Who” seems like an excellent match for their production efforts as they collaborate on the upcoming period of the series.

Although the program continues to be broadcast on the BBC in the UK, it’s now available on streaming service Disney+ globally due to a recent agreement. However, there’s been discussion about how effective this new approach has been since its launch with the most recent season.

At the Edinburgh TV Festival, Liam Keelan, Disney’s Senior Vice President of original productions in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa), expressed delight about Doctor Who. He explained that although the show is entirely owned by the BBC in the UK, they are thrilled to have the rights for the rest of the world.

To me, the unique aspect of it – being set in a science fiction universe – seems perfectly suited to Disney’s offerings. It brings something fresh and exciting to their repertoire, making it an excellent addition, in my opinion.

On the other hand, Deadline points out that Keelan hasn’t agreed to extend the deal past the upcoming season of the show.

As a passionate gamer, here’s how I’d put it: Now, I can catch my favorite shows even sooner! The new deal between BBC and Disney has shifted the UK airing times for the series. Starting Saturdays, episodes will be available first thing in the morning on BBC iPlayer. This is all aligned with Disney+’s schedule, and then, later that same day, it’ll air on BBC One as usual. It’s like getting a sneak peek before everyone else!

Previously in June, both the BBC and Davies stood up for the success of the latest season, countering accusations that it fell short in overnight ratings. However, it’s important to note that these numbers don’t factor in streaming views.

Reflecting back on March, I too stood behind the deal with Disney, voicing my support during a conversation on the They Like to Watch podcast. In essence, I believe we must consider the long-term future of the BBC, which seems destined for change in some capacity.

“Is Doctor Who going to die then? No! You’ve got to prepare for that kind of stuff.”

He additionally commended the expanded budget that the agreement has offered, stating: “Should Disney cease to exist tomorrow and we were compelled to produce Doctor Who on a regular BBC budget, well, we’d all gather forces and create it. In fact, the tales would transform into tense, confined ghost stories.”

Many folks find it quite appealing for this event to occur; however, I’m not forcing the issue upon you. Nevertheless, seeing as it takes place in other situations, I believe it’s somewhat unjust if Doctor Who is excluded from experiencing it.

In the United Kingdom, you can catch “Doctor Who” on BBC One, while viewers outside the UK can enjoy it on Disney+. For those in the UK, classic episodes of “Doctor Who” can be found on BBC iPlayer.
