Disney announces two huge Frozen projects coming soon
As a gamer who grew up with Disney classics and has seen “Frozen” more times than I care to admit, let me tell you, this news is music to my ears! I remember the excitement of the first movie, the joy of the second, and now the anticipation for the third is reaching new heights. It’s like being a kid again, waiting for Christmas with bated breath.
Brace yourself for another round of “Let It Go”! That’s right, Disney is gearing up to launch not just one but two major Frozen projects. Keep reading to find out the details!
More than a decade since its initial release, “Frozen” has morphed from just another successful Disney animated film into a full-blown cultural phenomenon. The original movie held the title of highest-grossing animated film until the arrival of “Inside Out 2,” and Disney has reaped billions from merchandising alone. The release of a sequel in 2019 further boosted its influence.
The franchise has expanded significantly over time, branching out from an Epcot attraction to characters featured in the “Once Upon a Time” TV show and even a Broadway musical. Consequently, it’s not surprising that Disney is considering a third movie, which was initially slated for release in 2026.
Disney officially announced that Frozen 3 will premiere in theaters on November 24, 2027. Given the popularity of Thanksgiving weekends as a favored release period for Disney’s holiday films, it comes as no surprise that they chose this date. Moreover, it’s fitting that the original Frozen movies also debuted on the same weekend.
The plot appears intricately woven, as suggested by D23 when filmmaker Jennifer Lee unveiled concept art depicting the sisters riding horses. Her comments hint towards a narrative that may continue from the second movie of Elsa, exploring her identity further as a “fifth spirit” who serves to link the human realm of Arendelle with the protection of the forests. It’s probable that the original cast members, such as Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, will be back to reprise their roles.
While that’s a big deal, it’s not the only big Frozen project coming to Disney fans.
The Frozen Musical coming to Disney+
It’s not surprising that Disney aimed to create a complete Broadway musical adaptation of their popular show, given its acclaimed music. This production debuted on Broadway in 2018, blending tunes from the movie with fresh compositions, quickly becoming a sensation. Regrettably, much like other Broadway shows, it had to close in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has yet to reopen.
On the other hand, the performance has thrived with its touring company and is a favorite in London’s West End. Disney recently announced that a screened adaptation of this production will stream on Disney+ in 2025, captured at Theatre Royal Drury Lane. In this version, Samantha Barks portrays Elsa and Laura Dawkes plays Anna. At D23, Barks performed “Let It Go” to generate excitement for the release. The play is engaging by adapting the film in a creative way (Olaf depicted as a stage puppet) and adding depth to scenes such as giving Hans his own song.
As a die-hard fan of Frozen, I’m thrilled to bits! It looks like we’re in for more magic and adventure as the storyline continues for one of Disney’s most beloved franchises. Can’t wait to dive back into Arendelle!
