Disney+ announces its raising subscription prices...again

As a seasoned gamer and long-time subscriber to various streaming platforms, I’ve seen it all – from the rise of Netflix to the fall of Blockbuster. And now, here we are, five years into Disney+, and they’re raising prices like a kid selling lemonade on a hot summer day.

After five years since its launch, Disney+ has increased its subscription fees yet again, with the new price being over twice as much as the original rate at which it was first introduced.

2019 saw the debut of Disney+, a new streaming service by Disney, joining heavyweights like Netflix and Hulu in the market. Since then, the streaming scene has evolved significantly with the arrival of Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, Paramount+, Max, and others, giving consumers more options. Nevertheless, Disney+ remains one of the most favored platforms, now offering bundles that combine Hulu, ESPN+, and Max for customers.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been thrilled to see the triumphs of Disney+’s original shows in the Marvel and Star Wars realms. However, last year during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the company faced criticism due to the meager streaming residuals they pay to actors, writers, and directors. Furthermore, Disney+ made waves when it announced plans to curb password and account sharing, as well as introducing tiered subscriptions with ads this past summer.

As a long-time subscriber of Disney+, I have to admit that I was initially delighted with the affordable pricing when it first launched. However, over time, it seems like the platform is continuously raising its prices, and as a budget-conscious individual who values entertainment without breaking the bank, I find myself increasingly frustrated. The latest price hike, which varies depending on the subscription type, is just another example of this trend. The increase in cost for Disney+ basic with ads from $7.99 to $9.99 and the premium version with no ads going up from $12.99 to $15.99 feels like a significant blow to my wallet.

Initially, when Disney’s streaming service debuted in 2019, it provided a single plan without advertisements priced at $7 per month. However, after nearly five years, the price hike seems substantial, causing concern among viewers who find the cost of multiple subscriptions burdensome. The introduction of ads, consolidation of various platforms into one subscription, and the creation of “playlists” or channels are making streaming services resemble cable television once more.

As a fellow Disney enthusiast, don’t forget to log into your Disney+ account and take note of the updated pricing that will be effective from October onwards. I wouldn’t want us to miss out on our favorite shows due to any unexpected changes!
