Disney abruptly ends another beloved Star Wars project

I’m really disappointed to hear that one of my favorite Star Wars shows won’t be continuing into the new year. It seems Disney Plus has been ending or canceling projects a little too quickly lately, and as a big fan, it’s just frustrating to see. It’s definitely left a lot of us feeling let down.

For decades, Star Wars has been incredibly popular, and in recent years, it’s found a home on the Disney Plus streaming service. However, as Disney and Lucasfilm work on new movies and shows, several projects have been delayed or cancelled. While the reasons vary, fans were surprised by the sudden announcement that this particular show was ending, as there hadn’t been much public discussion about it.

Young Jedi Adventures unexpectedly ends with third season

If you finished watching season 3 of Young Jedi Adventures and it felt like a true ending, that’s because it was! The episode, “Making Friends,” marked the end of the series for these young Jedi in training. It was a satisfying conclusion, though it might be confusing since the season was just called Young Jedi Adventures season 3 – not explicitly a ‘final season’.

If you saw the trailer, you might have noticed a subtle hint. The caption on the official Star Wars post said, “Follow your friends one last time,” but still referred to it as season three, not the final season. This confused many fans, who questioned why it said “last time.” It turned out the season was the last one for the show, as later confirmed – making the trailer caption a bit of a foreshadowing moment.

It was also surprising to see that the third season only had seven episodes. While shorter seasons are becoming more common, especially for shows like Star Wars, the first season had 25 episodes and the second had 23. Seven episodes feels quite short in comparison, and maybe that should have been a sign of things to come.

It’s not exactly clear why Young Jedi Adventures stopped production, but it’s now one of several Star Wars shows to end unexpectedly on Disney Plus. The Acolyte was cancelled after only one season, even though it had a strong start with many viewers, and Andor, a highly praised spin-off of Rogue One, finished after two seasons instead of the originally planned five (though that was a decision made by the creators).

The future of The Mandalorian is a bit up in the air. Disney and Lucasfilm have chosen to continue the story with a movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, coming to theaters this May, and it’s currently unknown if a fourth season of the series will happen. While the spin-off Ahsoka is getting a second season this year, it’s also uncertain if that will be the show’s final season.

It appears the Star Wars franchise is shifting its focus back to theatrical releases. While Disney Plus will likely have fewer Star Wars shows as a result, that’s probably not why Young Jedi Adventures ended so suddenly after only three shortened seasons. Still, fans would have appreciated a clear announcement that season three was the last – a simple tweet wasn’t enough to convey that!

Farewell to the Younglings of the Star Wars universe! What an adventure their journey has been.
