Disgraced Food Network star announces closure of her flagship restaurant 12 years after racism scandal

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I was taken aback when Paula Deen, a beloved figure in the culinary world, decided to close down her two restaurants in Savannah, Georgia, last Friday.

78-year-old television personality and chef, previously embroiled in scandal, revealed the shutdowns of The Lady & Sons and The Chicken Box through updates on Facebook and her site, PaulaDeen.com.

Deen, who faced professional consequences after confessing to using a racial slur in 2013, penned a message to her fans saying, “Hello everyone, my sons and I have decided that July 31st will be the final day of operation for both The Lady & Sons restaurant and The Chicken Box.

In the letter, she further wrote, ‘We are grateful for all the wonderful moments shared and your faithfulness during the last 36 years. This was penned not just by me but also by my sons Jamie (aged 58) and Bobby (aged 55).’

“Our hearts are filled with boundless affection and appreciation for each customer who’s visited us. Similarly, we owe a debt of gratitude to our remarkable team – both those who were here before and those currently working – whose dedication, compassion, and welcoming spirit turned The Lady & Sons into the special place it was.

‘Savannah will always be our home, and we’ll always be here to support our wonderful community.’

Amid the shock shutdowns, the family is attending to their other businesses.

The letter states that we are going to direct our efforts towards the four branches of Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen found nationwide – specifically in Pigeon Forge, Myrtle Beach, Nashville, and Branson.

In just a few days the trio will be on-site at one of their remaining eateries.

The message expressed their eagerness to make frequent trips to these restaurants, beginning with a visit to Branson on August 8th.

Instead, they provided customers with a phone number and email address for making future bookings, attending events, or requesting catering services.

The message was signed off with ‘Love & Best Dishes.’

Twelve years have passed since the television show, Paula’s Home Cooking series, was canceled by Food Network.

The cancellation resulted from the fallout after Deen admitted to using a racial slur during a court deposition.

As a lifestyle connoisseur speaking from personal experience, I recall the now-shuttered eateries in Savannah – their troubles seemed to be hidden beneath the surface.

He added: ‘I walk by there two or three times a week at lunch, and it was always packed.’

The Lady & Sons was Deen’s ‘flagship restaurant‘ and was established in June 1989.

Meanwhile, The Chicken Box was much newer, having opened just two years ago in 2023.

At the end of May, the restaurant had to momentarily halt operations due to electrical problems arising from bad weather conditions.

On May 28, there was a post on Instagram with this message: ‘I’m still experiencing electrical problems following the flood; the elevator isn’t working properly too. I hope to be back up and running tomorrow. Keep checking in for updates. Thanks a lot!’

The message contained a picture of a sign placed in front of the establishment, which announced: ‘We aim to resume operations for lunch tomorrow. Unfortunately, this flood caused significant damage. I apologize, everyone – from Jamie.’
