Marty Sheargold gave his first interview on Wednesday night since being fired from Triple M, and it was a tough one.
The 54-year-old presenter lost his job at the network in February 2025 after facing criticism for sexist remarks he made about the Australian women’s soccer team.
He sparked further outrage with a subsequent claim that endometriosis was fake.
A year after the incident, Sheargold was interviewed on A Current Affair, but host Allison Langdon first gave him a stern warning.
Introducing the segment, Langdon slammed the former radio star over his sexist outburst.
According to Langdon, a single, deeply offensive and sexist joke caused the end of Sheargold’s previously successful career.
Marty Sheargold’s harsh criticism of the Australian women’s soccer team was offensive and upset a lot of people, including myself.
It’s doubtful Langdon will get an apology from Sheargold, who, in an interview with Steve Marshall, suggested people should move on from the situation.
When Marshall questioned Sheargold about the sincerity of his first apology, Sheargold responded, ‘Yes, I apologize to the players and everyone connected with the Matildas.’
‘But to people that are offended by that on the outside of that group. Come on.’
Okay, so he says what he said wasn’t funny, but honestly, he doesn’t actually take it back! He’s not sorry for saying it, just that it all blew up and hurt Ang, his girlfriend, and their poor daughters. It’s like he’s more upset about the consequences than the actual thing he did. I just… I can’t wrap my head around it. It’s always about how he’s affected, isn’t it?
‘The comment itself? No. The fallout from it? Yeah,’ he said.
I was concerned not just about my own reputation, but also about the reputations of my team, the company we worked for, and the impact on the children involved.
My biggest regret is leaving the business. And honestly, it was tough on my kids to see their dad publicly criticized like that. It’s not something to be proud of when you’re trying to navigate life as a parent.
Despite acknowledging that his remarks had upset some people, Sheargold firmly defended his controversial statements.
I understand why some people are upset. It’s important to be sensitive when criticizing sports, especially women’s sports,” he explained.
I hope this inspires children to imagine themselves achieving great things, but I personally don’t have any interest in attending or paying to see it myself.
Sheargold, currently attempting a comeback with stand-up comedy, says he’s received a lot of supportive messages from women following the recent controversy.
He explained that women have approached him to say they feel like he and others are often unfairly grouped together and perceived as lacking a sense of humor.
Oh, I know he says it was ‘just a character’! That’s what he told everyone after all the fuss, especially after Fisk won all those Logies – can you believe it? He keeps saying his on-air stuff wasn’t him, that no one should have taken it seriously. But honestly, that’s just what a brilliant performer would say, isn’t it? It was him, and that’s why we all loved it!
‘When I was in the radio, I was playing the character of Marty Sheargold,’ he said.
People assume they know me based on how I appear at work, but that’s not the full picture. I definitely don’t tell my daughters that endometriosis isn’t a real condition – I would never do that.
I was listening to a really interesting interview with a comedian and actor on The Marty Sheargold Show last February. It was just after the Matildas had a tough loss – they went down 2-1 to the USA in the SheBelieves Cup, and he was talking about it then.
Troy Ellis, a co-host on the show, started a conversation about the national team, and Sheargold shared his opinion.
It’s like watching a group of Year 10 girls – all the drama, the arguments, the complaining about training and the coach, and the petty squabbles between friends.
The conversation then moved to Australia hosting the women’s Asian Cup.
‘Oh God. The Asian Cup,’ Sheargold said.
‘I’d rather hammer a nail through the head of my p***s than watch that. Got any men’s sport?’
Following the recent controversy, Southern Cross Austereo announced that they and Sheargold had agreed to separate ways.
