The Recruit
Slick spy thriller from the creator of The Rookie
Year: 2022-
Certificate: 15
Watch now on Netflix
Without a shadow of a doubt, the lineage of this spy show is undeniable. It’s not just that its creator hails from The Rookie, a popular American police series; it’s also produced by Doug Liman, renowned for directing The Bourne Identity. He has control over the direction of the first two episodes in the first season. And as the narrative unfolds, you can clearly see this impressive pedigree in the seamless combination of action and dry wit that keeps you hooked.
In a different role, Noah Centineo portrays Black Adam’s character, Owen Hendricks – a young, restless lawyer who takes on a job with the CIA for some routine legal research. However, his penchant for restlessness soon leads him into an international intrigue, where he evades gunfire, outruns adversaries, and forges a significant alliance – with the enigmatic yet potentially dangerous former agent Max (played by Laura Haddock). The narrative of the second series unfolds following a major setback for Owen, which is further complicated when he consults his superior. But fear not, Owen quickly bounces back into action! (Two seasons)
Death In Paradise
Cosy Caribbean crime drama, now starring Don Gilet as the island investigator
Year: 2011-
Certificate: 12
Watch now on BBC iPlayer
This series is often humorously referred to as a vacation for its creators, since they work in the beautiful, sun-kissed Caribbean while filming it. And let me tell you, it’s quite an enviable job opportunity!
This long-running series debuted in 2011 and has been gracing our screens ever since. The main character temporarily switches roles, playing a detective from the UK who stays quite a while on the picturesque Caribbean island of Saint Marie. The setting is one of the show’s key attractions, and its overall feel is relaxed and carefree. If you enjoy shows like Midsomer Murders or Murder She Wrote, this charming crime drama could be right up your alley.
Over the years, the main detective character has been played by different actors, each introducing their distinctive peculiarities: Ben Miller portrayed the eccentric, heat-averse Richard Poole; Kris Marshall played the disorganized Humphrey Goodman; Ardal O’Hanlon was sweet and easy to underestimate as Jack Mooney; while Ralf Little brought sensitivity to the role of Neville Parker.
In the upcoming Robinson Crusoe Detectives series, starting in 2024, Don Gilet, previously known for his role in EastEnders, will make an appearance as Melvin Wilson. Debuting in the Christmas special, Melvin finds himself quite out of his element living in Saint-Marie’s quaint but rustic police station. However, he eventually comes across a case that piques his interest and becomes a significant part of it (spanning 14 series).
Brian And Maggie
Presentation of a theatrical reenactment featuring Steve Coogan and Harriet Walter, based on the 1989 conversation between comedian-turned-journalist Steve Coogan (as Brian Walden) and former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher (portrayed by Harriet Walter).
Year: 2025
Certificate: 12
Watch now on Channel 4
James Graham, who’s well-versed in portraying contemporary Britain (as seen in Coalition, Brexit: The Uncivil War, and his play Dear England), presents an engaging and spirited two-part series delving into the dynamic between Margaret Thatcher (Harriet Walter giving a nuanced performance instead of a caricature) and journalist Brian Walden (Steve Coogan delivering spot-on mimicry).
The starting point was a 1989 television interview, conducted shortly after the dramatic resignation of Chancellor Nigel Lawson, which many believe played a crucial role in determining Thatcher’s eventual downfall. Around this time, she encountered her first leadership challenge.
Initially, we trace the events leading up to it over a period of ten years, starting from when Walden caught sight of Thatcher in the Commons while he was an active Labour MP in 1975. This was followed by their numerous TV appearances on LWT’s Weekend World, and the development of a mutual respectful friendship. It is worth noting that Walden had a small crush on Thatcher, while she viewed him as her favorite.
In these two episodes, we delve anew into the series of events that culminated in Mrs T’s harsh removal from power, but the focus here is primarily on Walden’s relentless pursuit to uncover the genuine woman hidden beneath her famously tough shell. Given today’s political climate where leaders are coached to dodge questions for mere minutes on camera, this narrative serves as a poignant homage to Walden and the meaningful dialogues he initiated.
You’re Cordially Invited
Raucous comedy starring Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon
Year: 2025
Certificate: 15
Watch now on Prime Video
Remarkably, it’s surprising that Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon have never shared the screen in a film, given their significant contributions as comedy powerhouses around the same era. It wasn’t until 2025, with an Amazon-produced movie about a wedding venue double-booked on the same day, that these two cinematic titans were united. The wait was undoubtedly worth it.
As a devoted father Jim, or Ferrell, I may seem more relaxed than you’d anticipate. After all, I can handle any situation – even styling my little girl’s hair for her special day. However, beneath my gentle exterior lies a competitive spirit. Our tranquility is shattered when we discover that the venue has been double-booked with Margot (Witherspoon), another resolute individual who shares my fervor for making this wedding unforgettable. It’s safe to say, it just might be – but for reasons none of us would want.
Invitation Extended: You’re Cordially Invited, a delightful film directed by Nicholas Stoller, who brought us the amusing Rose Byrne/Seth Rogen series Platonic on Apple TV+. This movie harks back to a classic style of cinema, seldom seen nowadays in theaters. With comedies being more enjoyable when shared with others, its release on Amazon offers an excellent opportunity for hosting a gathering and watching it together. The highlight alone is Ferrell’s scene wrestling an alligator, but the two stars share a palpable love-hate chemistry that Ellen DeGeneres seems to appreciate especially. (Running time: 111 minutes)
Paradise (2025 TV series)
Gripping US thriller about the US President’s protection officer
Year: 2025
Certificate: 15
Watch now on Disney+
2025’s initial captivating drama is a suspenseful thriller, and it’s one where less knowledge before watching makes the experience even more exciting. To keep things intriguing, we’ll give you only essential details. Sterling K Brown (known for ‘This Is Us’) portrays Xavier Collins, a dedicated Secret Service agent safeguarding the US President – a charismatic character skillfully played by James Marsden, an actor who looks so appealing that minimal digital de-aging is required for flashback scenes.
Additionally, let me add another point about this series: it’s abundant with flashbacks, but they are exceptional ones. Each one enriches both the characters and the plot, consistently reshaping your perception of the narrative.
Julianne Nicholson (from Mare of Easttown) and Sarah Shahi (from Sex/Life) will bring their talents to life in an eight-episode series filled with grandeur, intricate details, humor, and heartache. This gripping drama revolves around a captivating murder mystery and a suspenseful, convoluted plot that may leave you wishing it was available as a box set release.
As you anticipate the upcoming episodes, note that each installment may seem slightly distinct upon rewatching. This is characteristic of the series, and it’s likely to be featured on numerous ‘Best Of’ lists by the end of the year (consisting of eight episodes).
An Update On Our Family
Inside the world of family vlogging, particularly the Stauffer family and their adoption
Year: 2025
Watch now on NOW
Streaming family lives on YouTube can generate significant income for individuals. However, it brings up ethical dilemmas regarding the children involved, particularly very young ones who may not fully understand or agree to being exposed to a massive audience. The HBO documentary series delves into an unusually intense American instance – the Stauffers, who garnered millions of viewers with their skillful blend of authenticity and polished videos, revealing everything from Myka’s loss of a baby to the birth of another child.
When the Stauffer family welcomed Huxley, a young boy diagnosed with autism, from China, viewers found themselves captivated. Huxley soon became a central figure in their video content and gained significant popularity among their audience. However, one day, his presence on their feed began to dwindle, and in 2020, three years after joining the Stauffer family, they sadly announced that they had “rehomed” their now five-year-old son.
Numerous supporters speculate whether the family’s adoption was partially driven by seeking attention and financial gains. Regardless of the true circumstances as seen by the Stauffers, this documentary presents a deeply troubling portrayal of the exploitation of children on the internet, spanning over three episodes.

Sheridan Smith and Celine Buckens star in a tropical thriller about a missing plane

‘Vanishing Act: The Mystery of Flight X’
In this gripping five-episode series, a plane carrying 14 passengers inexplicably turns into vapor, leaving no trace of its existence – save for the absence of a black box. As the story unfolds, it raises the question: Is there a hidden conspiracy at the heart of this airliner’s disappearance, or was it just another tragic accident? And will the passengers ever be found, alive or deceased?
Sheridan Smith plays the older sister who boarded that ill-fated flight, while Celine Buckens (Showtrial) portrays her younger sibling, both determined to uncover the truth behind their missing family member.
This television series draws inspiration from Lucy Clarke’s book, whose work was also adapted for streaming on Paramount+. Initially, it has a somewhat unremarkable beginning in episode one, but Smith’s captivating performance keeps things interesting. As the episodes progress, it subtly unfolds in an increasingly engaging manner. If you enjoy airport-themed thrillers, this TV show offers an effortless viewing experience. (Five parts)
Yellowstone
Contemporary western starring Kevin Costner as a feared ranch owner, now available on Netflix
Year: 2018
Certificate: 18
Watch now on Paramount+
Watch now on Netflix
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but passionately recommend “Yellowstone” to everyone. This show, after all, is the U.S.’s top-rated scripted drama for a reason! The story unfolds around the grand Yellowstone ranch, the largest in the nation, and the relentless struggles of its powerful and intimidating owners to safeguard their empire. If you’re not already hooked, trust me, you should be!
The Duttons would be the ones in question. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is the patriarch, with his children Jamie (Wes Bentley), an attorney educated at Harvard; Kayce (Luke Grimes), a former Navy SEAL; and Beth, portrayed by Kelly Reilly from London, who describes her character as a ‘fearless tempest’ and a ‘unique role in a lifetime’.
Essentially, Yellowstone functions like a modern-day Western, as its Wild West remains quite untamed. It’s an exciting, violent, and utterly captivating series, with seasons 1-4 now available on Netflix, broadening the viewer base significantly (spanning five seasons).
Critical Incident
When a police officer pursues a suspect, both their lives are thrown into turmoil
Year: 2024
Certificate: 12
Watch now on ITVX
In simple terms, this engaging Australian crime series frequently switches between the past and present, keeping viewers in suspense as they follow Senior Constable Zil Ahmed (played by Akshay Khanna, known for The Doll Factory). This dedicated officer is on the verge of experiencing a life-altering event that could disrupt his career.
As Ahmed chases after a suspect, an uninvolved person gets severely hurt. Meanwhile, Ahmed grapples with his feelings of guilt and must face an inquiry into his actions, which bear a faint resemblance to the intense interrogations seen on shows like Line of Duty.
Despite being proven innocent, Dalia Tun (formerly Zoe Boe) is still caught in the aftermath of the incident, but for her, the consequences are perilous due to reasons entirely distinct from those surrounding the event itself.
You could begin watching it to observe how the key event unfolds; you’ll continue to stay tuned to understand the effect of this event on the main characters, Ahmed and Dalia, over the course of six episodes.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth headline a Mad Max prequel

Watch now on Sky
In 2015, when Mad Max: Fury Road was released, viewers were equally fascinated by Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa, who was a shaven-headed, one-armed avenger, and Tom Hardy’s portrayal of Max Rockatansky. Furiosa was a character that exuded danger, unwavering determination, and intense emotion. Her compelling performance left audiences yearning for more information about her past, particularly how she transformed into the lethal machine that Theron played, as well as the secret behind her missing arm.
Fortunately, this visually striking and action-packed prequel delivers exactly as promised. Unlike other Mad Max films, it focuses on the life of Furiosa, portrayed mainly by Anya Taylor-Joy. The story follows her journey from an innocent child to a determined avenger traversing the wastelands, seeking vengeance against the biker gang leader Dementus, brilliantly played by Chris Hemsworth. Running for approximately 148 minutes.
Sound Of Metal
Challenging story of a deaf musician, starring Riz Ahmed

In my perspective as a lifestyle guide, I find myself pondering over the profound narrative that unfolds when a man, whose very essence is music, grapples with deafness. This intriguing dilemma lies at the core of this drama, and the solutions it presents are not only thought-provoking but also unexpected.
Riz Ahmed delivers an exceptional performance as Ruben, the disillusioned drummer who bitterly fights against his hearing loss, navigating life within a secluded rural community designed for deaf addicts (having overcome addiction himself). Will the peace he discovers there be sufficient to mend his broken spirit?
As a devoted admirer putting it in my own words, I can’t help but share my excitement over the electrifying collaboration between Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci in “Slow Horses.” This captivating film has not only ignited a firestorm of critical praise but also caught the attention of award committees. It bagged two well-deserved Oscars, one for sound and another for editing, out of its impressive six nominations. Running a brisk 113 minutes, it’s a cinematic experience that will surely leave an indelible mark on viewers.
Queer
Daniel Craig as you’ve never seen him before, playing a gay outsider in 1950s Mexico City
Year: 2024
Certificate: 18
Watch now on Mubi
In Luca Guadagnino’s drama, set in 1950s Mexico City and inspired by a book by William S Burroughs, dignity is highly valued. The film, starring Daniel Craig as a gay outsider who presents himself as aloof yet yearns for connection, becomes infatuated with one young man. However, the story’s direction seems uncertain, leaving one to wonder if things will turn out well in the end.
Similar to Guadagnino’s past works like “Challengers,” this film exhibits a unique blend of sensuality and physicality without shying away from either. The narrative primarily delves into the psychological realm, but Craig’s captivating portrayal, set against the backdrop of a sizzling city and complemented by a contemporary soundtrack that includes Nirvana’s “Come As You Are,” keeps you engaged throughout. Be prepared for an incredibly remarkable performance from Lesley Manville in the latter half – despite our advance warning, it may still take you by surprise. (Running time: 137 minutes)
The Last Musician Of Auschwitz
Powerful testimony of the music that accompanied the horror of the camps
Year: 2025
Certificate: 15
Watch now on BBC iPlayer
Surprisingly, around fifteen orchestras were established within the network of Nazi concentration camps during World War II. These orchestras played tunes as trains arrived at Auschwitz and as laborers walked to and from their workplaces. The music was often dictated by SS officers who fancied themselves more refined than all other races, preferring classical composers like Mozart and Beethoven over contemporary musicians such as Mahler or Mendelssohn.
This remarkable full-length film centers around Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, the last living member of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz at 99 years old. She vividly recounts her experiences playing cello within the orchestra during her time at the camp, including her performance of Schumann’s Traumerei for infamous figure Josef Mengele. Regarding this, she shares that she played as quickly as she could.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my profound experiences from this captivating film. The music we hear isn’t just any ordinary tunes; it’s echoes from the ‘music factory’, a chilling backdrop for musicians and composers who persevered during the darkest of times. One such survivor is Petra Gelbart, a Roma musicologist, who sings a melody that has been passed down through her family, originating from her grandparent who miraculously survived Auschwitz. She implores everyone not to applaud, instead urging us to remember, ‘This isn’t a performance; it’s a testament.’ Her song is but one of many haunting musical testimonies that leave an indelible mark in this intensely powerful and emotionally stirring 89-minute cinematic journey.

Drive To Survive, Break Point, and Full Swing to create another compelling series about both on-field and off-field conflicts in this returning sports drama.
The second series with eight episodes delves into the backstage story of the 2024 Championship. It offers exciting game footage, but what truly captivates is the unique characters and intriguing relationships found in this grueling sport. We witness young talents like French scrum-half Nolann Le Garrec and England winger Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, both 21, navigating the distinct pressures of international rugby, as well as veterans like Wales’s George North, England’s Joe Marler, and Ireland’s Peter O’Mahony facing their future challenges as they reach the summit of their careers. We also see camaraderie among teammates vying for the same role, such as England fly halves Marcus Smith and George Ford, and even sibling rivalry with the Cannone brothers from Italy.
This Is Gaza
Stark portrait of life inside Gaza during the attacks, filmed by Yousef Hammash
Year: 2025
Watch now on Channel 4
Yousef Hammash, a Palestinian journalist, provides a vivid account of life within Gaza prior to October 7, 2023 and throughout the Israeli attacks on the region that followed. His depiction of the human impact of conflict is strikingly contrasted with what came before, and the grim reality of daily life during the assault is truly shocking.
While this video contains distressing content, it’s important to note that it’s not sensationalist in nature. Hammash recounts his experiences with a measured perspective, occasionally revealing the gravity of the situation through subtle facial expressions. In fact, he finds humor in certain moments, jokingly lamenting about the unkempt appearance he sported during those times. As he reminisces, he describes the period as one where many Gazans were essentially forced to revert to a more primitive way of life.
The movie powerfully teaches us a deeply emotional lesson about unintended harm caused by conflicts, especially since foreign journalists have limited access to Gaza. This firsthand account, therefore, becomes even more crucial and timely.
Vietnam: The War That Changed America
Documentary series about the conflict, narrated by Ethan Hawke
Year: 2025
Certificate: 15
Watch now on Apple TV+
From the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, the Vietnam War – a battle between North and South Vietnam – was one of the century’s most impactful conflicts. As America aligned with South Vietnam in the 1960s, domestic opposition and global disapproval escalated as nightly news broadcasts delivered war footage into homes. The geopolitical, economic, and social landscape of the country was forever altered.
This compelling and impactful six-episode documentary, narrated by actor Ethan Hawke, revisits a conflict that took place half a century ago to underscore its significance in American history. It recounts the tale of the conflict using archival footage, but it also locates and interviews soldiers and civilians from both sides, many meeting for the first time. The blend of their testimonies with the archival footage offers a vivid depiction of the frontline experience that is difficult to shake off – if you’ve watched Ken Burns’ ten-part series The Vietnam War, this one is more cinematic in its presentation. (Revisiting the conflict’s importance, featuring interviews and archive footage)
The Fall Of Diddy

As a lifestyle expert, I’m excited to share with you an intriguing exploration that delves into a captivating tale: The Untold Story of Sean Combs, a music titan better known as Diddy. This four-part series unravels the claims of sexual assault against him, which led to his arrest in 2024 – allegations he firmly denies. This gripping narrative is not just about the past, but also about the present, as it incorporates exclusive archival footage and groundbreaking reporting (in partnership with Rolling Stone). The true essence lies in the revealing interviews with individuals who have a unique perspective on this compelling situation.
In these four episodes, over thirty interviews are presented, featuring conversations with individuals like journalist Danyel Smith, former Combs producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones, Thalia Graves (who alleges that Combs raped her in 2001), and many others. We also get to listen to Diddy’s ex-personal chef Jourdan Cha’Taun, his longtime bodyguard Roger Bonds, and Dr LaJoyce Brookshire, who was Combs’ first publicist dating back to 1995. If you enjoy delving into such topics, it offers a well-rounded view of the situation with some new perspectives. However, be aware that it might not leave you feeling completely untouched by its content. (Four episodes)

Previously aired on the paid channel GOLD, the comedy series “Isle of Wight” by Joe Wilkinson and David Earl showcases humor at its best. In this series, Joe Wilkinson plays Simon, a man approaching his 40th birthday who travels to the Isle of Wight to celebrate with his mother (Sue Johnston) and stepfather (Bobby Ball). Along for the trip is his girlfriend, Donna (Diane Morgan), whom Simon has warned about their quirks but still finds it challenging for her to adjust. Questions like, “Why is a bread knife stored in the bathroom?” or “Can Ray ask a question without being subtly rude?”, “Will Sue ever let Donna cook on her own?”, and “Will Simon’s biological father (Nigel Havers) remember his birthday instead of focusing on his glamorous girlfriend, Melissa (Sarah Parish)?”, are some of the dilemmas faced by the characters.
This show is worth checking out if you appreciate comedy that’s grounded and well-observed, without overstaying its welcome. The peculiarities of each character are not merely for comedic effect; they all have underlying issues that get addressed by the end of the first season. It’s the harmonious blend of humor and heart that makes this show rewarding. In the second series, Donna (played by Morgan) is replaced by Joe’s fiancée, Esther (portrayed by Susannah Fielding), who tries her best to fit in. Gregor Fisher steps into the role of stepdad Ray in the second series, following the tragic demise of Bobby Ball. (Two seasons)
Mythic Quest
Workplace comedy set in the offices of a successful video game design studio
Year: 2020
Certificate: 15
Watch now on Apple TV+
As a lifestyle expert, I’d happily recommend delving into the world of “Mythic Quest,” one of Apple TV+’s finest comedies that offers a unique insight into the bustling gaming industry. This captivating sitcom centers around the trials and tribulations of a fictional video game studio, where the drama unfolds amidst the intense creative environment surrounding coders, testers, and managers.
In the finale of season 2, Ian Grimm (Rob McElhenny, who is now co-owner of Wrexham AFC) and Poppy Li (Charlotte Nicdao), the chief engineer, decided to leave their company to establish a new one called ‘Grimpop’. The third season starts with them searching for investors for their upcoming game. After a break of over two years, the fourth season premiered, showcasing the series at its finest as a hilarious workplace comedy suitable for everyone. (Four seasons)
Eldorado (1992 soap)
The BBC’s famously disastrous 1990s Spanish soap, now available to stream
Year: 1992-1993
Watch now on U (UKTV)
1992 saw the debut of a prime-time soap opera set in sunny Spain within an expatriate community of the fictional town Los Barcos. Initially met with cool responses and ratings struggles, it was unfortunately short-lived, running for only one year. The series was seen as a lightweight project by the BBC, its main issue being an inexperienced cast who either hadn’t acted before or haven’t since then. In today’s era of scripted reality shows, audiences might be more lenient towards the unpolished yet glamorous acting performances. Take a look for yourself and judge if you agree that Jesse Birdsall’s charming character Marcus Tandy, the JR Ewing-like figure, was the standout performer in this 156-episode series.
