Discord rolls out age verification experimental test with Face and ID scans in select regions
Story Highlights
- Discord users are required to verify their age with a face scan or ID upload to view sensitive content with this experiment.
- It is currently tested in the UK and Australia to likely meet their child safety laws.
- Discord has confirmed that the data used for age verification is only for the one-time process and is not stored by them or their vendor.
Discord, a well-known social platform, is experimenting with a new feature that checks the age of its users by either scanning their face or ID. This age verification function is currently accessible only in the United Kingdom and Australia, aimed at assisting users in adjusting content filter settings and regulating visibility of sensitive content.
Discord is experimenting with an age verification feature in the UK and Australia
Recently, I’ve noticed that when trying to access sensitive content on Discord, I’m being prompted to confirm my age. They’re giving me two options: either scan my face or upload a copy of my ID. This seems like a necessary step to ensure the platform remains safe and appropriate for all users.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve noticed that Discord’s support team has mentioned that the feature they’re testing right now is experimental. It seems it’s being rolled out in regions like the UK and Australia at the moment. This could be to ensure compliance with their digital safety regulations, which are particularly stringent to safeguard younger users like myself.
In some areas, these updates adhere to regulations such as the Online Safety Act of the UK and Australia’s policy to limit access for users below 16 years old. To put it simply, a Discord representative explained that they are conducting trials in specific regions to restrict entry to certain chat rooms or user settings based on age.
How Discord’s age verification is triggered and how it works
In relation to the procedure, this occurs only once, either when you initially set up your sensitive content preferences or encounter marked material like nudity or adult content. No matter the circumstance, the method remains consistent. If needed, you have the option to repeat the verification process.

Additionally, remember that this rule applies only to users who haven’t confirmed their age yet or are part of our current experiment. When prompted, you’ll see an age verification window appear, where you can either use a webcam or upload an ID photo using your smartphone for verification.
To alleviate privacy concerns like my own, the Discord team ensures that they neither store data nor do their partners. They explicitly state that no biometric information is gathered during facial scanning and the ID scan is erased immediately after verification is complete.
