Disclaimer episode 5 recap: Catherine’s life comes crashing down

As a dedicated admirer of gripping storylines and exceptional acting, I wholeheartedly endorse Apple TV+’s “Disclaimer“. This series has been one of the most captivating shows of the year, with each new episode only intensifying the suspense.

Are you a fan of clever, suspenseful storytelling paired with a talented cast? Then you need to be watching Disclaimer on Apple TV+ if you aren’t already. The streamer’s gripping new series is one of the year’s best shows, and a new episode just dropped.

In the fifth episode of “Disclaimer,” we witness a rapid decline in Catherine Ravencrof’s (Cate Blanchett) life, revealing Stephen Brigstocke’s (Kevin Kline) relentless nature. His pursuit of revenge against Catherine knows no bounds, and he is willing to go to extreme lengths to ensure her total ruin. However, let me remind you before we delve deeper into this week’s “Disclaimer” installment that spoilers lie ahead.

Spoiler alert! Go stream Disclaimer episode 5 as there are spoilers ahead.

Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) is SO done with Catherine. And not to defend Catherine here, but Robert didn’t even allow Catherine to get a word out. He didn’t ask for space or even time. Robert simply kicked Catherine out of the house.

When Catherine gets home, she sees her son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee) and her husband engaged in conversation. Robert informs Catherine that Nicholas will be staying with him while she’s gone for work. He understands that Catherine won’t confront Nicholas in such a situation. Clever, but maybe not as emotionally warm as Stephen, who swiftly moves on to his next action right away. However, one might question the level of empathy in this scenario, as it could be seen as less than tender, if not cold compared to Stephen’s actions.

Let’s chat about Nicholas…

It can be observed that Nicholas displays a lack of gratitude, disregard for others’ efforts, and an overall laziness. Furthermore, his rudeness is quite shocking. One might assume he’d remember the events that occurred in the past, yet it seems he does not. It’s also worth mentioning that Catherine may have had emotional issues as a mother. However, was she so terrible that it caused lasting harm to Nicholas? Robert has consistently been supportive of him. In light of these facts, it becomes challenging to feel sympathy for Nicholas.

Within just a few hours, Nicholas tends to leave a disorganized state wherever he is – be it his bedroom, kitchen, or living room. Furthermore, episode 5 hints at more than just Nicholas’ smoking habit; it’s shown that when his father goes to bed, Nicholas secretly leaves the house to purchase illicit substances.

Stephen’s sinister plan

After setting up an Instagram account for his son, Stephen decides to connect with Nicholas. The account is filled with photographs taken by Jonathan. It appears genuine, so Nicholas reciprocates and follows Stephen’s profile. As they begin exchanging messages, Stephen manages to grab Nicholas’ attention. When the moment is right, he makes a startling revelation: the novel “The Perfect Stranger” is based on his mother’s life, and HE is the boy that Jonathan saved. To make matters worse, Stephen proceeds to share explicit photos of Nicholas’ mother without his consent.

Before, Nicholas was dealing with some issues. Now, he seems to be in an extremely distressed state, suggesting he might have taken too much. A panicked call from Nicholas woke up Catherine, and she’s concerned because her son hasn’t responded after hanging up. I didn’t particularly like Nicholas earlier, but that situation is quite harsh, Stephen.

The book is out

Before I clashed with Nicholas, I swung by Catherine’s workplace to share copies of my recently written book. I spun a tale, claiming that Catherine had been bothering me due to the content I penned. I insisted that the real truth about who Catherine is needed to be exposed. Needless to say, it didn’t sit well with her at all.

Apart from meeting up with Stephen, Robert also shared an evening meal with him. During this time, Robert informed Stephen about their separation, and expressed regret over any distress Catherine may have brought upon him.

Disclaimer episode 6 premieres on Apple TV+ on Nov. 1.
