Dirty Dancing sequel with Jennifer Grey reprising her role sends fans into meltdown over Patrick Swayze’s absence

Fans of the movie Dirty Dancing are very upset and excited at the same time after learning a sequel is happening. Jennifer Grey will be back as her famous character, but sadly, her late co-star Patrick Swayze won’t be involved.

Lionsgate announced today that a sequel to the popular 1987 movie Dirty Dancing is in the works. Jennifer Grey will return as Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman, the character she played in the original film over thirty years ago, which became a huge cultural hit.

The news quickly led to a lot of online discussion, and many dedicated fans wondered how the series could go on without Patrick Swayze, who sadly passed away in 2009 at the age of 57 after fighting pancreatic cancer.

I seriously can’t even wrap my head around it! They’re doing another Dirty Dancing movie, which is amazing, but how can they possibly do it without Patrick Swayze? It just feels…wrong. So many of us fans feel the same way, it’s all over the internet right now! It’s like, yes to Jennifer Grey, but no way can this work without him.

Another added bluntly: ‘Absolutely not. He is gone and no one can replace him.’

People were surprised the project was moving forward, and their reactions varied from disbelief to strong disapproval.

One person expressed disbelief that a ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel was really in the works, writing, “It’s wild!” Another was much more skeptical, saying, “I highly doubt it.”

Many fans cautioned the studio that trying to recapture the essence of Johnny Castle would be difficult, if not impossible, without Patrick Swayze.

One commenter strongly protested the idea, saying, “Don’t even try. No one could ever replace Patrick Swayze.” Another predicted the movie wouldn’t succeed, writing, “It’s great to see Jennifer Grey again, but without Swayze, it’s likely to fail.”

Still, not everyone was entirely opposed to the idea.

One fan shared that they were both excited and anxious about the remake. They explained that ‘Dirty Dancing’ is a beloved classic, and it’s difficult to recapture that special feeling. Their biggest hope is that the new version will honor the original instead of being a low-quality remake.

You know, when I heard about Grey coming back, I thought it was a really smart move – truly iconic! And honestly, this sequel feels bold and exciting. I’m definitely intrigued to see what happens next and where the story will take us. It’s a promising development, and I’m keeping a close eye on it!

Honestly, a lot of people were wondering if another installment was really needed. We’ve seen this series revisited before, and let’s just say the results haven’t always been fantastic. It made everyone question if there was a genuine reason to continue the story.

One fan pointed out that there was a sequel to Dirty Dancing, referring to the 2004 film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, which featured Diego Luna and Romola Garai.

One person joked, “Are you talking about a third Dirty Dancing movie?” Another pointed out that a sequel, Dirty Dancing 2, already exists.

Lionsgate has announced that Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will be producing the upcoming film, with plans to start filming later this year.

Kim Rosenstock, known for Dying for Sex, has been tapped to write the screenplay.

Jennifer Grey will return to her iconic role as Baby in a new film, more than 35 years after the original became a hugely popular and beloved romantic classic, earning over $200 million globally. She’s also involved as an executive producer.

A director has not yet been announced.

Jonathan Levine was originally going to direct the project, but he’ll now be an executive producer instead.

Although the story is still being kept secret, the negative reaction indicates the new movie will be closely watched by fans who greatly admire the first one.
