Director’s scathing comments on Demi Moore resurface after her stunning Golden Globes win and ‘popcorn actress’ comment

A well-known director from Hollywood has criticized Demi Moore, who won a Golden Globe, over her conduct during the filming of his project.

At a Manhattan screening of Indecent Proposal, director Adrian Lyne shared that Mira Sorvino, aged 62 at the time, appeared to be somewhat unconventional or peculiar to the audience.

Lyne acknowledged that, in his mind, there was no conceivable way we would manage to complete this task during the filming process.

Instead, he advised that he needed to set aside the dispute and contemplate the weather or something amusing.

83-year-old Lynne shared his thoughts during a showing of his 1990 film “Jacob’s Ladder” at the Roxy Cinema, located in downtown Manhattan, back in November.

He playfully hinted at the audience, saying, “I won’t disclose the name of the actress,” but then revealed, “It was Demi Moore!

I recall that we found ourselves seated together, and I remarked, ‘Regardless of our feelings for each other, it seems we must work our way through this difficult situation.’

‘And after that it sort of worked! It sort out of worked out, really.’

On Sunday, Moore hadn’t previously won any significant acting award, but she triumphed at the Globes, receiving the Best Actress accolade in a Musical or Comedy category for her movie “The Substance”. Her exceptional portrayal of a struggling actress who resorts to taking an underground anti-aging pill made her the front-runner for this award.

Critics dubbed it as being the finest performance of her career. 

While Moore has previously never addressed the specific clash with Englishman Lyne.

However, she expressed her unease towards him in the movie “Indecent Proposal,” where she co-starred with Woody Harrelson.

The narrative unfolds around a couple, who following significant losses in gambling at Las Vegas, encounter a wealthy figure, portrayed by Robert Redford, who extends an intriguing proposition: one million dollars, contingent on him sharing an intimate moment with the character Diana, played by Moore.

In their disagreements, Moore and Lyne debated various topics such as his handling of explicit love scenes and her body weight. According to Moore’s memoir Inside Out, during the period between being cast and the costume fitting for the movie, Lyne commented on her weight loss.

First off, I thought it was a flattering remark. Later on, I expressed my concern about feeling uncomfortable during upcoming love scenes, so I’ve been putting in extra effort to improve my physique, as stated by Moore.

It seems like he didn’t pay attention to anything I said. Instead, he maintained an uneasy gaze.

At last, he exclaimed, “I don’t prefer you appearing masculine!” Leaving his office, I felt quite bewildered.

Moore added, ‘Very reluctantly, Adrian backed down.’

In my fervor as a dedicated admirer, I can’t help but note that Lynne’s approach to Moore’s workout regimen seemed to have an ongoing impact on her physical well-being throughout the filming process. The weight concerns persisted, casting a shadow over her performances and undeniably affecting the overall production.

In my memoir, I pondered over the fact that each time he caught sight of me clad in sneakers or pedaling a bike, his expression would convey a mix of disapproval and disgust that was hard to ignore. Despite my attempts to deflect it, his reactions eventually managed to wear me down.

By the end of the film, he managed to penetrate my thoughts so deeply that I ended up following his initial wish to increase my weight.

‘I was almost unbearably uncomfortable about it,’ sshe said.

Moore also stated that shooting Indecent Proposal was tedious and shared her uneasy feeling during the filming of intimate scenes: ‘I was acquainted with Glenn Close, and she cautioned me about Adrian being an unusual collaborator on love scenes… Adrian is indeed a dedicated voyeur, which contributes to why his films are so intriguing and impactful.’

However, on set, his behavior was quite unconventional: he rarely paused to speak – instead, he spoke loudly and enthusiastically throughout our filming of the intimate scenes. He would exclaim things like “Extremely explicit! Oh my, I’ve got a boner on this one!” repeatedly.

Let me rephrase that for you: “‘Hey, seize hold of him!’ Initially, it seemed a bit off-putting; here was this man with a style reminiscent of a British rocker, sporting long hair, becoming increasingly agitated and shouting about genitals.”

I’ve tried to maintain the tone and intent while using more appropriate language.

Initially, I found his behavior uncomfortable, but as I grew accustomed, I recognized its benefits. His exaggerated actions diverted attention from my discomfort since he was so flamboyant…I learned not to interpret his outbursts literally.

In the end, they came to an understanding about filming the intimate scenes. He was given creative freedom to shoot them as he saw fit, yet I reserved the right to assess the footage later. If I found any content that appeared excessively intrusive or unnecessary, he agreed to remove it.

However, she found herself thinking: ‘Although Adrian and I often drove each other insane, I must admit that he has never once failed to captivate me with his beauty.’

In a heartfelt confession at the Roxy Cinema, I, a fervent admirer, could hardly contain my excitement as Lyne openly shared about the challenges he encountered while capturing intimate scenes on camera. He didn’t shy away from using the word ‘difficult’, but for me, it felt like he was unveiling the behind-the-scenes struggle of an artist trying to portray passion authentically.

He mentioned that he often struggles to separate discussions about sex from his personal feelings, and what particularly angers him is repeatedly hearing the term ‘smut’ used in such contexts. Instead, he tries to approach the subject matter in a genuine, interesting, and enjoyable manner.

In my opinion, there should be an element of humor when portraying intimate scenes; otherwise, viewers might feel uncomfortable or even laugh awkwardly. If there’s no comedic relief, the scene could fall flat.

As a devoted admirer, let me recount my perspective on this cinematic masterpiece: The Rolling Stone called it ‘sexist propaganda’, labeling it a ‘sweet treat laced with malice’. Meanwhile, feminist icon Betty Friedan criticized its narrative vehemently, asserting that the film would instruct 13-year-old girls to prioritize dieting until anorexic, augment their appearance with silicone, and chase after lonely billionaires – as reported by the LA Times.

Despite criticism, Moore, who happened to be married to Bruce Willis then, stood up for the film, discussing its contentious plot with Vanity Fair.

In my opinion, what she did wasn’t disrespectful. To me, the most significant thing she gave up was not her body, but the possibility of losing her marriage, which meant more to her than anything else.

In the year 1996, she earned the title of the highest-paid actress in film history by receiving a whopping $12.5 million to play in Striptease. However, Moore was also given the label ‘Demanding Moore’ due to her excessive requests during filming.

During her acceptance speech on Sunday, Moore revealed that before she secured the role in The Substance, she had worried that her acting career in Hollywood might have come to an end.

In her speech, she shared an old memory from thirty years past when a director had labeled her as a ‘popcorn actress‘. She explained that this comment gradually eroded her confidence, leading her to question if her career had reached its pinnacle and if she had fulfilled her purpose, a doubt that surfaced a few years back.

At a moment when I was feeling particularly down, an extraordinary, brave, daring, unconventional, and somewhat outrageous screenplay titled ‘The Substance’ found its way to me. Somehow, it felt like the universe was nudging me, suggesting that there was still more for me to accomplish.

She ended her speech by declaring that she was rejoicing in this moment as a symbol of her completeness, the affection propelling her, and for the privilege of pursuing something she cherishes, and being reminded that she is part of something greater.

While Moore has been on a productive spree with numerous films recently, Lyne, on the other hand, has only produced one movie in the last twenty years – Deep Water released in 2022, featuring Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas.

He admitted during his talk at the Roxy Cinema about having mixed feelings around filmmaking. 

I really dislike the entire filmmaking process. It’s just terrible in my opinion. From the loud noises like a ringing bell, the clapperboard, and someone shouting for silence, it all creates such an overwhelming sense of fear by that point, everyone is on edge.

However, he mentioned that he was still optimistic about the possibility of working on a new movie, entitled “One Neck,” a chilling thriller revolving around a serial killer, which is to be filmed in the affluent coastal community of the Hamptons.
