Directors Guild Award nominations indicate a tight Oscar race

On Thursday, the Directors Guild of America revealed its nominees for the best directing in feature films. These nominations are considered a strong indicator of who will be nominated for the Best Director Oscar, as guild members begin the voting process.

The Directors Guild of America has nominated Paul Thomas Anderson (“One Battle After Another”), Ryan Coogler (“Sinners”), Guillermo del Toro (“Frankenstein”), Josh Safdie (“Marty Supreme”), and Chloé Zhao (“Hamnet”) for its highest film award.

Winners will be announced at the 78th DGA Awards on Feb. 7 at the Beverly Hilton.

The Directors Guild Award is a very reliable indicator of who will win the Oscar for Best Director. In the last 23 years, 20 DGA winners have also taken home the Oscar. Just last year, Sean Baker, who won the DGA Award for directing “Anora,” also won the Oscar.

I’m so excited! Paul Thomas Anderson, the guy behind films like “Boogie Nights” and “There Will Be Blood,” is back with a new movie. It’s a really powerful, sweeping story about people who push back against the system, and it’s inspired by the novel “Vineland” by Thomas Pynchon. It feels like a truly important film.

Many of this year’s nominees are well-known to the Directors Guild of America. Paul Thomas Anderson has now been nominated for a DGA award for best film three times, including this year for “One Battle After Another,” and previously for “There Will Be Blood” and “Licorice Pizza.” Chloé Zhao, who previously won both the DGA Award and an Oscar for “Nomadland,” is nominated again for the moving historical drama “Hamnet.” This makes her one of only a few female directors – alongside Jane Campion, Kathryn Bigelow, and Greta Gerwig – to receive multiple nominations from the guild.

Guillermo del Toro, the director who previously won a DGA Award for “The Shape of Water,” has been nominated again for his work on the long-awaited film adaptation of “Frankenstein.” Meanwhile, Josh Safdie has received his first DGA nomination for a theatrical feature film, recognizing his energetic sports drama, “Marty Supreme.”

The Directors Guild Awards (DGA) nominations are frequently a good predictor of the Oscars because many directors belong to both organizations. Although each group votes separately, the significant overlap in membership means the DGA Awards are often a strong indicator of who will win the Oscar for Best Director.

Ryan Coogler, the director, and Ludwig Göransson, the composer, first connected as students at USC film school. Their newest project together is a unique and powerful blend of blues music and horror elements, marking a significant achievement for both of them.

The directors nominated by the DGA this year are largely the same as those recognized by the Golden Globes, including Anderson, Coogler, Del Toro, and Zhao. However, the Globes also nominated Jafar Panahi and Joachim Trier, who weren’t considered by the DGA. This difference shows that the Globes are voted on by international film critics, while the DGA’s voters are primarily people working within the film industry.

The guild revealed the nominees for the Michael Apted Award, which recognizes exceptional directing for first-time filmmakers. This award has become well-known for highlighting new and promising talent. This year’s nominees are Hasan Hadi (“The President’s Cake”), Harry Lighton (“Pillion”), Charlie Polinger (“The Plague”), Alex Russell (“Lurker”), and Eva Victor (“Sorry, Baby”). Last year’s winner, RaMell Ross, received an Oscar nomination for Best Picture with his film “Nickel Boys.”

As a movie and TV reviewer, I was really interested to see the Directors Guild of America nominations announced this week. They cover a ton of great work – everything from serious dramas to laugh-out-loud comedies, and even documentaries. In the drama category, shows like “Severance,” “Andor,” “The Diplomat,” and “The Pitt” all got nods. Over on the comedy side, “The Bear,” “Hacks,” “The White Lotus,” and Apple TV+’s “The Studio” are in the running. It’s a strong lineup, and it’ll be fascinating to see who takes home the awards!
