Director Luca Guadagnino to helm new American Psycho film adaptation for Lionsgate

As a dedicated film enthusiast with a penchant for psychological thrillers, I am beyond excited about the upcoming American Psycho adaptation! With Luca Guadagnino at the helm and Scott Z. Burns penning the script, this project promises to be a masterful exploration of the human psyche.

It appears that Oscar-nominated director Luca Guadagnino is close to finalizing negotiations for directing a fresh take on the “American Psycho” film, based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 horror novel of the same name. Here’s what we currently know about this upcoming Lionsgate production, which you can find below.

To clarify, this adaptation is not a re-telling of the 2000 satirical horror film that starred Christian Bale, but rather an entirely fresh take inspired by the original book. If Guadagnino agrees to direct, he’ll be overseeing the project based on a script penned by Scott Z. Burns.

Luca Guadagnino is primarily recognized for his work in directing and producing movies like “Call Me by Your Name”, “Bones and All”, and “Challengers”. His latest venture is the upcoming historical romance film titled “Queer“, scheduled for a limited theatrical release on Nov. 27, 2024, by A24. Additionally, he’s currently involved in the production of a thriller movie called “After the Hunt“, featuring renowned actors such as Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri, Andrew Garfield, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny.

Conversely, Burns is recognized for penning screenplays for films like “The Informant!“, “Contagion“, “Side Effects” and “The Laundromat“. Additionally, he’s renowned for developing the anthology miniseries “Extrapolations“.

Under the banner of Frenesy Films, a fresh take on the “American Psycho” movie is being developed. Sam Pressman, through his production company Pressman Film, will serve as the project’s executive producer.

According to a Lionsgate executive, here’s their take on collaborating with Guadagnino for the upcoming adaptation, as reported by Deadline:

We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.

1991 saw the publication of a novel that explores the dual life of a self-centered, affluent investment banker based in New York City named Patrick Bateman. This man leads a secret existence as a ruthless serial killer. With a film adaptation now on the horizon, speculation about casting choices is brewing. In particular, Cooper Koch, a rising star who gained fame for his portrayal of Erik Menendez in Netflix’s “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” has publicly expressed interest in assuming the lead role of Patrick Bateman in the movie.

On October 19th, he went to the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he mentioned that he hasn’t taken on the role of a serial killer yet but feels he could pull it off. As of now, no cast has been finalized for this project, so there’s a chance he might get the part. We’ll simply have to keep our fingers crossed and find out later.
