Summary
- Dijon has shared his second solo studio album, BABY
- Clocking in at 12 tracks, BABY arrives on the heels of the musician’s major year, contributing to both Bon Iver’s SABLE, fABLE, and Justin Bieber’s SWAG
At long last, I can finally dive into BABY, the hotly anticipated sophomore studio album from Dijon – a project named after his cherished son too!
Approximately four years following its groundbreaking precursor, titled “Absolutely,” and with the understated artist experiencing his most prominent year due to contributions to two of the year’s top albums – Bon Iver’s “SABLE, fABLE” and Justin Bieber’s “SWAG” – the long-awaited album from Dijon is now what we’ve been eagerly anticipating after his temporary break from solo work.
As a gamer, I’d rephrase it like this: “Personally, the 12-track album titled BABY feels more like a personal project rather than a solo one. It’s a heartfelt family production, a reflection of my small family unit that has expanded to include my young son. Since the release of Absolutely, I’ve noticed my impact on the music scene becoming increasingly apparent. The raw and refreshing album (and its live performance visual set in a dining room) has paved the way for a new era, where intimate, improvisational-feeling sonic experimentation is at the forefront.

A modern blueprint for seamlessly blending different music genres, the lesser-known but influential “Absolutely” created a space where Mk.gee’s “Two Star & The Dream Police” and Matt Champion’s “Mika’s Laundry” could not only survive but thrive. This label, IYKYK (if you know, you know), spearheaded by the musician Dijon, may be the project that propels him into mainstream stardom. Known for his knack of merging profound lyrics with innovative production techniques, Dijon excels in this new album, showcasing a more refined sound and slightly smoother production.
1. Hey little one!
2. Here’s another baby!
3. Up a bit more!
4. Let’s get this party started! (informal)
5. Yamaha (brand name) could be paraphrased as “the Yamaha instrument” or “the Yamaha device.”
6. Fire alert!
7. Official referee!
8. Play the track again!
9. My friend!
10. Faithful and Marie (two names)
11. Self-operating
12. Child’s love (to clarify, “Kindalove” may refer to a toy brand or affection for children)
The opening track, titled “Baby!”, which is a polished version of the “BABY burner” demo, offers us a glimpse into the new album’s realm, mirroring the disoriented first hours of a newborn. Musically, it wanders through various loops and includes snippets of conversations. Notably, Dijon purposefully navigates into territories he hasn’t explored before, but specifically as a father. Each raw composition transition he makes is well-considered, and every choice for experimentation is made with great thoughtfulness.
The cheerful exclamation “Another Baby!” introduces a sense of childlike happiness with its sparkling synthesizer melody. On the other hand, “HIGHER” celebrates Dijon’s fatherhood journey at its zenith. Lastly, “(Freak It)” expresses a more sensual atmosphere through whispery vocals.

On track five, titled “Yamaha,” Dijon emulates the style of Absolutely’s “Many Times.” He skillfully blends loops, instrumentals, and lyrics, resulting in a captivating yet chaotic atmosphere. However, compared to the frenetic pace of Absolutely, the chaos here is carefully managed. It’s more deliberate and focused.
After shouting “FIRE!”, the text “(Referee)” follows, giving off a vibe similar to coming down from a high point, and is one of the standout tracks on the album. A testament to precise layering, the glitchy guitars blend seamlessly with Dijon’s thoughtful musings about life’s questions. “my man” is one of the longer songs on the album and assumes a tapestry-like form, combining repetitive, raspy singing, expansive background melodies, and a dreamy outro.
Towards the end, the duo “loyal & marie” showcases Dijon’s radiant falsetto, followed by the sample-based track “Automatic” and a genuine Dijon love song titled “Kindalove”. This makes for a fitting conclusion to a project that, despite having a diverse personality, is held together by a consistent theme: unending love.
