Diego Luna says Andor will change the way people look at Rogue One, imagines a rerelease

As a die-hard Star Wars fan who has witnessed countless interstellar adventures, I must say that “Andor” has undeniably left its mark among the galaxy’s finest tales. Having initially been skeptical about a prequel series centering on a supporting character from a film about a Star Wars subplot, I was pleasantly surprised by the captivating character drama, deliberate pacing, and refreshing absence of Jedi or lightsabers that “Andor” delivered. It’s an invigorating change to immerse oneself in the lives of ordinary folks from the galaxy far, far away.

Ever since “The Mandalorian” debuted in 2019, Disney has produced roughly 30,000 TV shows set in the “Star Wars” universe. Among these, the standout is “Andor,” a hard-hitting series that delves into the origins of the Rebel Alliance, with Diego Luna‘s character, Cassian Andor, as its main focus.

In the 2016 movie “Star Wars: Rogue One”, Cassian made his debut for the first time. Initially, I had my doubts about a TV series centered around a secondary character from a spin-off “Star Wars” storyline. However, “Andor” won me over with its compelling character development, thoughtful tempo, and absence of Jedi or lightsabers. It’s refreshing to delve into the lives of everyday people in that distant galaxy.

In 2025, the second and concluding season of Andor will stream on Disney+. As Luna shared with Entertainment Weekly, this final chapter is expected to offer a fresh perspective on Rogue One . He stated, “I believe that viewers who watch Rogue One following season 2 will perceive the film in an entirely new light.” By understanding the events leading up to K-2’s presence, audiences will likely experience the narrative of Rogue One differently. This fresh view is not limited to just K-2 but extends to many other characters as well, making for a fascinating watch, according to Luna.

The term “K-2” stands for K-2SO, a humorous and unfiltered robot character from the movie “Rogue One.” Portrayed by Alan Tudyk, who is currently starring in the Syfy series “Resident Alien,” K-2SO aided Cassian and his team in spying on the Empire. Although he didn’t show up in the first season of “Andor,” he will make an appearance in the second. Luna made a quip, “What a handful that droid is – he speaks whatever crosses his mind without a filter.”

It was delicious to get to work with Alan again and be on the same set with him. It just helps fulfill the full circle…You’re going to see why K-2 is so important in Rogue One, and how does he get to be such an important character for the Rebellion.

I’m confident that it’ll be exciting to witness K-2SO back in action when Andor season 2 premieres. Given that the upcoming episodes are expected to lead directly into Rogue One, one can’t help but speculate if Disney might re-release the movie in theaters, perhaps even for a limited run. This idea has also crossed Luna’s mind. “I’m certain we’ll get a chance from Lucasfilm and Disney to watch season 2 first, followed by the film on a big screen with loads of popcorn and friends nearby.”
