Diddy will REMAIN in jail after dismissing bail appeal ahead of criminal trial in May
As a seasoned observer of the world of entertainment, I find myself deeply concerned about the ongoing legal troubles that Diddy, or Sean Combs, is facing. Having spent many years working in this industry and being privy to its intricacies, I cannot help but feel a sense of dismay at the turn of events for this iconic figure.
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs has decided not to pursue an appeal for his bail, which means he’ll stay in custody until his sex trafficking trial scheduled for May 2025. He made this decision on Friday.
After receiving approval to use a laptop in prison and following his recent bail appeal, the now-discredited rapper chose to make a withdrawal, as indicated in the court records obtained by People.
It comes just weeks after Combs, 55, was denied bail for the third time before the Thanksgiving holiday. His previous two requests made in September were also denied.
In that very month, the influential figure in music was taken into custody in Manhattan and is now imprisoned at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
He has notably been charged with sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution, but has pleaded not guilty to all charges ahead of the trial set for May 5.
At the end of last month, US District Judge Arun Subramanian chose not to grant Diddy’s appeal for bail after a court hearing.
Initially, the rapper’s legal team contended that a $50 million bond proposal was adequate to guarantee that Combs would not escape and would not attempt to influence potential trial witnesses by any means.
Subramanian presented concrete proof of Diddy’s violent actions, specifically a 2016 hotel security footage showing him assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie. Additionally, Subramanian emphasized that there was a significant danger of witness intimidation in the denial made by the party involved.
According to the decision made, it was determined that the government presented sufficient proof such that there is no set of circumstances that can be reasonably expected to guarantee the safety of the public.
Previously, prosecutors claimed that Combs was attempting to influence witnesses while in prison. Subramanian concurred, stating that there exists substantial proof indicating a significant risk of witness tampering.
The judge additionally referred to proof that Diddy breached prison communication regulations, such as purchasing inmate Phone Access Code numbers to facilitate three-way conversations with individuals not listed among his authorized contacts.
‘Compelling evidence of Combs’s propensity for violence’ was also cited in the decision.
Combs requested a $50 million bond and around-the-clock home confinement, pledging his mother’s house as security in the process.
Previously, two other judges were convinced by the prosecution’s reasoning that the founder of Bad Boy Records posed a threat to the community and therefore needed to be incarcerated.
Last month, Diddy stood before a federal judge in New York with the backing of his loved ones present in the courtroom.
He was not shackled after his lawyers claimed that doing so offended the ‘dignity’ of the court.
Diddy broke into a smile upon noticing seven relatives in the second row of the audience: his mother Janice (aged 83), who donned sunglasses, his adopted son Quincy (at 33 years old), Justin (30 years), King (Chance at 18), and his twin daughters D’Lila and Jessie (both 17).
He blew them kisses, formed a prayer sign with his hands and tapped his heart.
This week, court records show that after being refused bail yet again, Combs was permitted to use a computer for his defense efforts.
Locked up right now for some heavy allegations, like sex trafficking, my online presence is non-existent according to the authorities.
On Thursday, Judge Arun Subramanian granted permission in an order he personally issued within the Southern District of New York.
The request for a laptop from the discredited manufacturer’s team is their newest demand, as they have previously petitioned the court to allow them to attend all future hearings without restraints.
That request was denied, unlike the recent plea for the in-cell laptop. An additional request for him to be freed ahead of his trial was tossed in November.
In this context, Subramanian’s decision meant that Combs was given the green light to utilize the court-approved computer for about seven days a week, from 8 am till 3:30 pm.
During that period, his access to the device will be limited solely for the purpose of scrutinizing the evidence presented by both parties – a standard procedure known as disclosure, which involves sharing information about potential witnesses and the proof they intend to bring forth during the trial.
In the words of Judge Subramanian, the intention behind the Discovery Laptop is for examining discoveries, rather than jotting down or saving notes.
As a diligent follower, I comprehend that the court believes the laptop was pre-installed with discovery resources, yet it only permits me to scrutinize these materials and offers no other functionalities.
If the defendant desires to gain access to the Discovery Laptop, his legal representative should engage in a discussion about this matter with the authorities.
If more disagreements arise, the court may make changes to this ruling, Subramanian noted as he prepared to manage the notable case, which is now in its second year under his supervision in the Southern District.
The new development caused anger among people online, specifically pointed at the judge.
I can’t help but express my frustration: That judge seems to be losing touch, he doesn’t require his computer at all!
Marc Agnifilo, legal representative for my client, has written a letter to the judge asserting that my client is not being given the same care or treatment as other inmates at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC).
While Diddy remains incarcerated, awaiting trial the following year, it’s worth noting that Jay-Z has lately faced accusations claiming he and Diddy sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl in the year 2000. This allegation is not without controversy.
In a court case, an unidentified individual asserted that she was physically attacked by Jay-Z and Diddy at a post-MTV Video Music Awards gathering in September of 2020.
After the allegations, the rapper has strongly criticized and firmly rejected them. He recently broke his silence with a detailed statement on Sunday during the past weekend.
One of several lawsuits, filed by lawyer Tony Buzbee in October, accuses Defendant Combs. Furthermore, Buzbee has stated that over 100 potential plaintiffs are considering legal action against Combs.
Yet, Jay-Z criticized Buzbee harshly, referring to him as a “disappointing individual” and an “attorney who preys on vulnerable clients while wearing inexpensive attire.
He added that the allegations are ‘so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one!!’
Afterward, the rapper conveyed that his sorrow was shared with his family members and articulated, ‘My spouse and I will need to discuss this situation with our kids.’
‘A person who’s reached an age where her peers might encounter media coverage about these allegations, prompting queries. It saddens me to see another instance of youthful naivety being tarnished by the harsh realities of unkindness and avarice.’
He also expressed later on, ‘My sympathy and backing are with the genuine sufferers worldwide, who witness their tale being dramatized for financial gain by this unscrupulous lawyer in an inexpensive attire…’
To summarize, he strongly refuted the assertions and expressed his eagerness to demonstrate his unique qualities.
