Diddy was a ‘diva’ on SNL as he demanded closed set for rehearsals but Will Ferrell was having none of it
As a seasoned observer of the entertainment industry, I must say that the recent allegations against Diddy are truly disheartening. Having spent a significant part of my career in this field, I have seen firsthand the power dynamics at play and the potential for abuse.
In a straightforward manner, it can be expressed as: In 1998, during a Saturday Night Live performance, Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs requested a completely private setting (a closed set) for rehearsing his song “Come with Me”.
On the Las Culturistas podcast on Wednesday, Ana Gasteyer, who was a member of Saturday Night Live from 1996 to 2002, shared that he indeed closed down the entire building.
‘You can tell like the five a**holes in the six years that I was there when they would be like, “So and so is in the building, everybody stay in your dressing rooms.” Which is applicable if you’re a presidential candidate. But apart from that, really, it’s my house. For P. Diddy, he demanded a totally closed set.’
Defending the 55-year-old rap mogul, who has fallen from grace, it should be noted that during his performance, the stage was filled to capacity with a band, an entire string section, a horn section, and the legendary Jimmy Page playing his famous 1975 Kashmir riff on guitar.
As a diehard fan of none other than Diddy himself, formerly known as Puff Daddy, I found myself eagerly counting down the days till May 9th, when David Duchovny graced the SNL stage. In the lead-up to this epic event, I heard whispers about Diddy’s six-minute musical showdown. My heart pounded with anticipation as I rehearsed his performance on Thursday.
‘[Will] went on down the stairs, and he marched right in,’ the 57-year-old funnywoman recalled.
Here’s my take:
Ana went on to say: “It was an incredibly significant event, as no one but that deserving individual should have had their ‘Kashmir moment’ disrupted by Ron. And to be honest, Diddy didn’t seem to handle the situation gracefully.
He felt quite uneasy, yet there seemed an air of pretentiousness about it all – a sense that something significant might occur. But in reality, one would simply enter the studio, claim their place, and announce, “I’m in the studio. This is where I work.
In 2020, the Emmy award recipient who is now 57 years old confirmed to Vulture what Gasteyer had shared: “I overheard someone saying, ‘Ron should go up onstage,’ and before everyone could look around, I was already rushing out the door.
However, despite being a three-time Grammy winner, he didn’t seem overly upset when he went back to the enduring NBC comedy series in 2010, joining his musical group Diddy-Dirty Money, which included Dawn Richard and Kalenna Harper, for a performance.
Diddy also made an uncredited cameo in a skit where he danced with two-time Oscar winner Robert DeNiro in full drag.
Prior to his scheduled federal sex-trafficking trial on May 5th, the hip-hop artist born in Harlem is still detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Two judges have rejected his request for bail.
On Tuesday, legal firms The Buzbee Law Firm, AVA Law Group, and Curis Law added five more lawsuits to a previous case in the US District Court of Manhattan against Diddy. These new allegations involve incidents of severe sexual misconduct, including sexual assault, abuse, and exploitation, and are said to have taken place around 2001. The plaintiffs include three men and two women.
Lawyer Tony Buzbee has accumulated sufficient proof from more than 120 victims, some as young as nine and thirteen years old, to initiate lawsuits. He established a hotline for victims and witnesses that received approximately 12,000 calls within a 24-hour period.
Lawyer Marc Agnifilo for the “The Closer to God” rapper has dismissed the lawsuits as blatant efforts to generate publicity. He expressed confidence in the facts, their defense strategies, and the honesty of the legal system.
Diddy – who was arrested September 16 in Manhattan after a grand jury indictment – ‘has never sexually assaulted anyone – adult or minor, man or woman,’ he added.
A man who is a father of seven has denied the accusations that he forced and mistreated multiple women over an extended period, with assistance from companions and workers. He is also accused of intimidating victims into silence using threats like blackmail and violence, which included kidnapping, arson, and physical assaults.
Initially, Diddy stood firm against any accusations, but things changed when CNN revealed a video from May showing him attacking his former girlfriend, Cassie Fine, at the InterContinental Century City in 2016.
In 2005, when she was just 19 years old, the singer was given a contract by Diddy (who was then 36) to Bad Boy Records. They are said to have been in a relationship from around 2007 up until 2018.
On November 17th, the Emmy-nominated producer resolved Fine’s (formerly known as Ventura) legal dispute accusing him of rape, abuse, and human trafficking, though the settlement amount remains confidential.
On March 25, authorities connected to Homeland Security carried out searches at the residences of Diddy, one located in Holmby Hills and another in Miami, as part of an ongoing probe into allegations of human trafficking.
As a devoted admirer looking back, I’m astounded to see that the ex-backup dancer I once knew continues to captivate audiences with an impressive 10.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify and maintains a massive following of 45.9 million social media enthusiasts.
