Did the MCU’s Fantastic Four Director Just Confirm Doctor Doom’s Surprise Appearance?

Since Marvel Studios announced the main cast for “” featuring Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, there’s been a lot of debate among fans and rumor mills: could Robert Downey Jr.’s character Victor von Doom make an appearance in the MCU as part of this film? Although numerous reports suggest that Downey Jr. has secretly filmed a cameo for the July premiere, director has finally clarified – to some extent.

As a passionate cinephile who’s always excited about the Marvel Universe, I’ve noticed that Victor Von Doom, AKA Doctor Doom, has made an appearance in every major on-screen adaptation of the Fantastic Four thus far, from the 1994 Roger Corman oddity to Fox’s iterations in 2005 and 2015. With Ralph Ineson cast as Galactus last year, many speculated that Doom would at least make a cameo, hinting at his future role in the Doomsday saga. Yet, despite persistent rumors about his appearance in the post-credits scene, director Shakman has denied it. And considering he’s the one in charge, I guess we just have to wait and see if he changes his mind.

“Doom is not a part of my film, and therefore not a part of my purview.”

How Doctor Doom Can Still Appear in ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’

Leaving open the statement “Doom isn’t included in my movie” provides plenty of room for interpretation regarding Robert Downey Jr.’s possible cameo, as it doesn’t necessarily exclude the possibility of a post-credits appearance that is not directly connected to Shakman’s direction. This can be achieved if the film includes an additional scene following the credits, which could potentially feature Doom, even though Shakman may not have directed it.

Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” also directed a post-credit scene in “Thunderbolts,” hinting at the New Avengers witnessing the Fantastic Four’s spaceship entering Earth 616’s atmosphere. This implies that they might have done something similar for “Fantastic Four: First Steps.” As a result, Shakman can claim that his film doesn’t feature Doom in the story, but there’s still a chance for Doom to appear later on.

It’s logical that the film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” should include a nod to Doom, as not doing so might leave fans unprepared when they watch “Avengers: Doomsday“. Similarly, just like how “Thor: Ragnarok” ended with a teaser that connected directly to “Avengers: Infinity War“, it’s likely that “Fantastic Four: First Steps” would be the ideal spot for a hint about Doom’s involvement to be subtly introduced.

It’s clear that Doom isn’t essential to Shakman’s film, as this was apparent prior to his latest announcement. Since Galactus is the main villain, introducing Doom unexpectedly would likely feel contrived and detract from Galactus’ impact. However, placing him in a post-credits scene would be an effective way to hint at future MCU developments, much like the Thanos teases in Phase 2 and Phase 3 films before his significant role in Infinity War.
