Did Stranger Things S5 Volume 2 Just Give Away That Fan Favorite Character’s Fate?

With the release of the first part of Stranger Things season 5 on November 27th, excitement for the show’s final episodes is at an all-time high. While the ending could see any of the main characters die, one popular character appears to be safe, based on the latest trailer.

Now that we know Vecna’s plan from the first part of Stranger Things season 5, the final volume will conclude the series. With so many characters, it’s hard to predict who will survive, but fans are especially worried about one of them.

Joe Keery’s character, Steve Harrington, has had one of the most noticeable changes in Stranger Things. He started as a typical, somewhat arrogant ’80s movie bully, but has evolved into a kind and helpful friend. This transformation has made Steve a fan favorite and a beloved part of the show, even though the series frequently puts him in danger.

Similar to how Eleven appeared to die at the end of Stranger Things season 1 and Hopper in season 3, Steve faced a seemingly fatal attack by Vecna’s bats while entering the Upside Down in the first part of season 4. His situation looked dire, and fans quickly started online movements hoping he would survive.

This wasn’t the first time Steve found himself in danger thanks to the show. After losing a fight to Jonathan at the end of Stranger Things season 1, it became a pattern: Steve seemed to get seriously beaten up at least once in every season.

Steve Harrington has faced life-threatening injuries twice before: in season 2, his adopted brother Billy knocked him out, and in season 3, Russian scientists severely beat him at the end. Given the show Stranger Things‘ history of characters seemingly dying only to return, it’s understandable why fans are concerned about whether Steve will survive season 5.

The full trailer for the second part of Stranger Things season 5 eases fans’ worries quite well. Steve and Dustin share a heartfelt “You die, I die” moment, which strongly suggests that neither character will actually die, as it wouldn’t make sense for both of them to perish.

Fans have often worried about whether Steve would survive, but as the show goes on, it seems less and less likely his character will be killed off. The longer Steve is around, the more important he becomes to the story. While he had a heartwarming moment with Jonathan at the end of the first season, he was still a supporting character then.

By the second season, Steve had unintentionally become a sort of babysitter for the younger kids and a guide for Dustin. He was fully integrated into the main group of characters by season three. The show’s decision to release the final part of season five in two volumes shows they’re willing to take chances, but killing Steve off now would be a major mistake.

Killing Keery’s character would likely be a mistake, mainly because he’s so popular with fans. Beyond that, it would be incredibly damaging to Dustin, who is still reeling from Eddie’s death and relies on these older figures as role models. Losing another one so soon would be devastating for him.

Fans will likely be relieved that Steve, played by Joe Keery, is expected to survive, but that doesn’t guarantee the safety of the show’s large cast. Several supporting characters are in real danger, and some have been facing potential death for a while now.

Brett Gelman’s character, Murray, has become less funny and feels unnecessary, so if he were to die – especially after giving Jonathan a ring for Nancy – it would be a genuinely sad moment. As for Jonathan and Joyce, losing either of them would be heartbreaking for viewers, but the story could still move forward without them.

While Joyce and Jonathan play bigger roles in the overall story than Steve, they’re actually more likely to be targeted by Vecna because of their relationship with the main hero. This season, Will has become the central character, and his fight against Vecna might be driven by a personal grudge.

If Joyce dies in the final season of Stranger Things, it would leave Will without his main source of support. He’d have to face Vecna while also dealing with grief, which could unexpectedly make him more powerful. This suggests that Joyce is actually in more danger than Steve appears to be.
