Introduces Sentry/The Void, portrayed by Lewis Pullman as a powerful figure, to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Golden Guardian confronts the main characters in Thunderbolts. With Steven Yeun previously holding this role, director Jake Schreier discusses the shift in casting and any potential impact on the film’s plot and character development.
In my own words, I remember the moment when I collaborated with Lewis Pullman for his role as Sentry in Top Gun: Maverick. Although the original casting choice was different, there were no major modifications made to the Sentry character or the Thunderbolts screenplay. Instead, Lewis and I embarked on a fresh journey to uncover the optimal way to portray this intricate character. From a writer’s standpoint, the essence of the role didn’t undergo drastic changes. What I appreciate most about working with Lewis is his openness and dedication to understanding all facets of the character, which made our collaboration truly rewarding.
Initially, Yeun was set to star as Sentry in the 2023 film Thunderbolts, reuniting him with director Schreier following their collaboration on the popular Netflix series Beef. However, due to scheduling issues, Yeun had to withdraw from the project. As a result, Schreier selected Pullman for the role of Sentry. According to Schreier, he and Pullman carefully worked out every detail of the character to ensure that Pullman’s live-action debut in Thunderbolts, within the MCU, appears authentic. “We would regularly meet up every weekend to go over each line in the scenes, even when he is just portraying a regular character named Bob,” Schreier explained. “We focused on which lines connected more closely to specific aspects of the character and clarified, albeit subtly, which parts of the character those lines were related to.
In the comic books, Robert Reynolds, often referred to as The Sentry, is similar to Superman. He acquired his superhuman abilities after consuming a lab-made serum. This transformation made him one of Earth’s mightiest heroes. However, The Sentry struggles with a tumultuous dark side called the Void, who causes destruction wherever he appears. Initially, The Sentry is introduced as the enigmatic Bob in “Thunderbolts,” where he’s found wandering with memory loss problems and faces off against the main team.
*Please note that “Thunderbolts” is a Marvel Comics title.

It’s unclear if Pullman’s character is a hero or an antagonist, but that doesn’t matter much here. Sentry faces off against the Thunderbolts, composed of Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko). These former villains are on a quest for redemption, attempting to make up for past wrongs by undertaking a perilous mission. Guided by Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), the Thunderbolts have a new challenge: they must protect the world, something they’ve never had to do before.
The Sentry Will Return in Avengers: Doomsday
As a die-hard fan, I can’t contain my excitement! The Sentry’s extraordinary abilities won’t just be showcased in the upcoming Thunderbolts. Instead, I’ll be stepping back into the role for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. Can’t wait to see what unfolds!
Thunderbolts* opens in theaters on May 2.
