Did Katy Perry curse the Swans? Lions fans reveal the one act pop star did which secured their crushing win over Sydney at the 2024 AFL Grand Final
As a seasoned music enthusiast who has attended countless concerts spanning across various decades and genres, I must say that Katy Perry’s performance at the AFL Grand Final was nothing short of electrifying! Her ability to engage the crowd and seamlessly blend old hits with new tracks is truly commendable.
During the 2024 AFL Grand Final held at the MCG on a Saturday, Brisbane Lions triumphantly defeated Sydney Swans by an impressive 60-point margin, and many spectators attribute this victory to the influence of Katy Perry.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share the thrilling news: That iconic pop sensation, 39 years young, pocketed an astounding $5 million for gracing us with a mere 20-minute pre-game spectacle at the championship!
The songstress opened the act with her iconic—and prophetic—2013 hit song Roar.
Convinced the hitmaker gave them the ‘luck’ they needed to land the crushing blow against Sydney, the Lions and their supporters hailed the songstress as a ‘godsend’.
In a heartfelt Instagram post about the AFL Grand Final on Sunday, the team expressed their gratitude to Katy for her brilliant selection of the opening song.
‘Thank you for opening with Roar,’ they wrote alongside an emoji of prayer hands.
Fans of lions gathered at the comment section, expressing that the song was quite fitting and established a suitable mood for Brisbane’s victorious match.
In one user’s opinion, ‘Roar’ brought you good fortune!’, while others thought it was ‘appropriate’ and ‘an ideal choice’ for the opening number during AFL’s marquee event.
‘You definitely Roared—GO LIONS!!! (thanks Katy Perry),’ yet another user added.
Other viewers of the AFL Grand Final, who now use X (previously known as Twitter), commented on the irony of Katy singing “Roar” just before the Swans suffered a devastating loss.
One user said: ‘Ok, you know I find it funny that Katy Perry opened her performance at the AFL Grand Final with “Roar” and that the winning team for the Grand Final was the “Brisbane Lions”.’
I switched on the TV to catch the AFL game. I must admit, I was taken aback by the outcome as I had anticipated Sydney would emerge victorious in this Grand Final. However, upon reflection, it makes sense given that we’re dealing with the Brisbane Lions here – and as a fellow Leo, I can relate! To add to the excitement, Katy Perry performed her empowering anthem “I am a champion, you’re going to hear me roar,” which resonated deeply with me.
Someone else predicted the results before the Grand Final kicked off.
Predicting a victory for the Brisbane Lions at the Grand Final. The reasoning behind this prediction is that Katy Perry is performing ‘Roar’, and some consider it as a sign of good luck or an omen.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must confess that I noticed a bit of discontent among Swans supporters regarding the singer’s selection of a particular song. One ardent football fan put it this way: “I believe she inadvertently jinxed the Swans by singing ‘Roar’.
‘Katy Perry shouldn’t have been allowed to play Roar. The fix was in from the AFL,’ another wrote.
After Katy was allegedly requested to not perform “Roar” at this year’s AFL Grand Final due to concerns it might unintentionally benefit the Brisbane Lions excessively.
During an appearance on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev, and Nick last week Katy seemed to give credence to the rumours after co-host Brendan Fevola mentioned he used to play for the Brisbane Lions.
Regarding the Lions, I find myself needing to exclude my tune ‘Roar’ from the performance lineup. It seems unfair, according to everyone’s feedback,” she clarified.
‘No, you have to play it!’ said Fevola. ‘Because you were booked in way before Brisbane made it.’
Katy consented to participate, however, she mentioned that the setlist for the halftime show has not been finalized yet.
The speculation was also discussed on Channel Nine’s Today Show last Wednesday, with co-host Sarah Abo suggesting the song might give the Lions a morale boost to tip the scales in their favour.
On Saturday at the MCG, the Brisbane Lions inflicted a crushing 60-point defeat upon the Sydney Swans, leaving them battered and bruised.
In the past eight years, the Swans have experienced four Grand Final losses, most recently in 2020. Unfortunately, many of their players seemed to save their top performances for the team bus, while the Lions delivered an outstanding display on the field.
In the meantime, Katy prepared the ground for the Lions’ victory by mesmerizing the audience with a captivating 20-minute performance featuring two songs from her recent album, 143 – Lifetimes and Gorgeous (a duet with Kim Petras).
As a devoted fan, I seamlessly integrated some fresh tracks into her setlist, yet it was her chart-topping hits that truly electrified the crowd. Kicking things off with a powerful rendition of Roar, she then moved on to belt out Teenage Dreams, Dark Horse, and Firework.
Katy Perry also sang I Kissed A Girl alongside Tina Arena, followed by a performance of Tina Arena’s famous Australian hit, Chains.
However, surprisingly, she did not perform “Hot n Cold,” a song often associated with MasterChef Australia as its unofficial theme and humorously referred to as Australia’s de facto national anthem, during her setlist.
