As a moviegoer and space enthusiast, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the groundbreaking event that unfolded earlier this week. Six remarkable women, including pop sensation Katy Perry, embarked on an extraordinary journey, soaring into space for 11 minutes aboard Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin rocket. Just like millions of others, I found myself glued to my screen, tuning in to the broadcast that was scheduled for our TV screens in 2025 (and live-streamed via Paramount+).

While there have been plenty of jokes flying around about this mission, I couldn’t resist taking a playful swipe at a familiar face after listening to her post-flight reflections. You see, my former colleague and fellow ‘American Idol’ judge was among the passengers on this historic voyage. And as we all know, there’s nothing quite like a little friendly banter between friends!

As a cinema enthusiast, let me share my perspective: On April 14, I witnessed history unfold as an all-female crew soared beyond the Kármán line for the first time since 1963, marking a significant milestone in space travel. The passengers returned with tales of a life-altering journey that left me awestruck. Meanwhile, back on Earth, we couldn’t help but find humor in the situation, particularly CBS journalist Gayle King’s priceless expression before the launch.

katy perry also received a few chuckles, as she planted a kiss on the ground upon her arrival, and when inquired about her feelings post-flight, she responded:

I’m deeply immersed in the feeling of love. This connection to love seems boundless. It appears that this experience has demonstrated that there may be more love within us than we realize – more love we are capable of sharing.

Luke Bryan, a judge on American Idol, who previously collaborated with Katy Perry until she departed the series following the previous season, appeared to find her remarks amusing. In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, he expressed this by saying:

Did they provide a meal before takeoff? And if so, did Bezos offer mushrooms as part of that meal? Because I am genuinely excited about going to space!

Katy Perry isn’t known for holding back on expressing her feelings, so it’s not surprising that this situation sparked her creative streak, which is more like a poetic nature. This trait has been evident to Luke Bryan and the American Idol audience many times before, and Bryan himself acknowledged it, saying:

Oh, the cosmic journey you described, Katy, felt like a blissful rollercoaster for me too! I’d love to hear more about the emotions you experienced during that voyage.

Luke Bryan expressed enthusiasm about embarking on a space journey himself, but acknowledged his family would likely decline. Regardless, he tuned in to witness Katy Perry’s space adventure, ensuring the mission went smoothly for the team. In his own words, Bryan stated:

“I might have my family say ‘no’ to me going into space, but I was definitely rooting for Katy Perry and her crew.

I found myself drawn in, as the truth is, having a friend might lead to troubles. Therefore, I wished to prevent any potential issues.

Fortunately, the mission concluded triumphantly, and it’s evident that Luke Bryan wouldn’t have faulted Katy Perry for kissing the earth upon her return to Earth’s surface. In fact, he admitted that he too would have done the same thing himself.

Currently, Luke Bryan serves as a judge on ‘American Idol’, sitting alongside Lionel Richie and Carrie Underwood who took over from Katy Perry on the panel, twenty years after she won the show in Season 4.
