Dick Van Dyke, 98, forced to ‘crawl’ to car during terrifying Malibu wildfire evacuation: ‘I couldn’t get up’
As a long-time resident of Malibu and having lived through numerous natural disasters, I can say that the Franklin Fire is undoubtedly one of the most terrifying incidents we have faced. The rapid expansion of the fire from 100 acres to over 2,600 in just a few hours is truly alarming.
During the alarming Malibu wildfire evacuation, Dick Van Dyke had no choice but to scuttle to his vehicle since he had depleted his energy while attempting to quell the blaze.
On this coming Friday, as he celebrates his 99th birthday, the legendary screen star, along with his wife Arlene Silver (age 53) and their pets, evacuated their home earlier in the week. They’ve since come back and successfully found their missing cat Bobo, who had run away during the fire.
During an interview with a regional news station that was broadcasted on the Today show on Thursday, Van Dyke stated that the blaze appeared to be originating from the nearby hill and was clearly visible.
‘And oh my God, and we got out of here.’
He revealed he was forced to crawl to his car after exhausting himself trying to use a fire hose, saying: ‘I had exhausted myself, I couldn’t get up.
As an overjoyed fan, I found myself in a precarious situation when a small blaze ignited in our shared guesthouse. Fortunately, three amazing neighbors swooped in to help. They bravely rescued me, swiftly returned, and heroically extinguished the fire that had threatened our peaceful community.
Van Dyke left fans devastated when he revealed Bobo had gone missing during their evacuation.
On Facebook, Van Dyke posted that Bobo was discovered on Wednesday, and he also shared an image showing the grumpy cat reconnecting with his loved ones.
Upon returning home this morning, we quickly located Bobo. The curiosity surrounding his disappearance was such that Animal Control was enlisted for help.
‘But, thankfully he was easy to find and not harmed.’
Arlene commented on her fan, noting that Bobo’s cries had signaled his arrival, which she overheard even before spotting him, just minutes after we returned home. She expressed her gratitude in her message: ‘He wasn’t happy!!! Thankful!!!’, Arlene.
For Van Dyke, turning 99 on December 13th is going to be even more special since he’ll receive some fantastic news ahead of his birthday!
In this peaceful coastal town, many famous figures choose to reside, seeking tranquility away from the busy streets of Los Angeles and the allure of the ocean waves. However, the absence of construction adhering to fire-resistant standards leaves these communities more vulnerable to potential wildfire threats.
During the Franklin Fire, not just the star of Mary Poppins was put at risk, but also other actors such as Cher, aged 78, were compelled to evacuate due to the blaze.
Stars like Barbra Streisand and Jonah Hill are located within areas requiring immediate evacuation, but it remains unclear whether they’ve vacated these zones yet.
On Tuesday, Van Dyke posted a picture of his cat Bobo and disclosed that he went missing during their evacuation, stating: “Arlene and I managed to get ourselves and our pets out safely, but unfortunately Bobo slipped away while we were departing.
We’re hoping for his wellbeing and that the community at Serra Retreat can endure these devastating fires.
The fires have exploded due to heavy Santa Ana winds in Southern California.
Photographs captured on Tuesday of Dick Van Dyke’s residence showed no signs of damage from the fire, despite nearby homes being consumed by it.
Cher, who also lives in the area, evacuated in the face of the fast-moving fire.
On Monday evening, it was revealed by Cher’s publicist, Liz Rosenberg, that she had relocated to a hotel along with her beloved pets, as reported to The New York Times.
A spokesperson for Streisand couldn’t disclose her current location; they are yet to learn about it.
Stars residing nearby, yet unconfirmed whether they’ve left, include Beyoncé and Jay-Z.
On Monday, they joined Blue Ivy, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles, and themselves at the premiere for the computer-animated prequel to The Lion King titled Mufasa.
Unexpectedly, red carpet events were held only a day following allegations against Jay-Z in a court case, where he was accused of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl, with Diddy being present during the incident at a party following the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards.
Jay-Z vehemently denied the accusation in a bizarre statement he shared after the news broke.
Just like Julia Roberts, who resides in Malibu’s Point Dume district, Jonah Hill also possesses a property in the Malibu Colony – an area requiring evacuation orders.
Lady Gaga has a Zuma Beach mansion that is located in the mandatory evacuation area.

Notable figures such as Nicolas Cage and Karlie Kloss, along with others like Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Aniston, have made this fashionable coastal region their home. Previously, several other celebrities have resided in this well-known neighborhood over time.
As a devoted follower, I can’t stress enough that this wildfire wasn’t merely a danger to people, but it posed a significant threat to crucial cultural sites in the vicinity, among them being the revered Getty Villa.
The part of the Getty Museum known as the museum itself has been built to resemble an old Roman villa and showcases artifacts dating back to Greece and Rome.
The swift wildfire ignited approximately at 11 p.m. on Monday evening, covering around 100 acres initially. By 7 a.m., it had grown to about 2,200 acres, and by noon, it had surpassed the 2,600-acre mark.
On Tuesday morning, not a single part of the Franklin Fire had been brought under control; instead, it relentlessly advanced in the east section of Malibu, an area already under a compulsory evacuation notice.
As of Tuesday morning, the evacuation order has gone out to more than 6,000 residents.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it as: “I was among those who had to evacuate our upscale homes in neighborhoods like Sweetwater Canyon and Serra Retreat, due to the unfortunate fires that swept through. Early Tuesday morning footage from the affected area showed brave firefighters valiantly fighting the blaze.
In simple terms, a local informed the Los Angeles Times that fires were prevalent all around. People were fleeing in cars from Malibu, moving in both directions along the coastal highway, following a blaze that expanded over approximately 1,800 acres by morning.
In an emergency notice, the city stated that ‘Malibu Pier, along with various other buildings, have been affected. Buildings situated on Malibu Knolls Road and Sweetwater Canyon are also impacted.’ Meanwhile, students and faculty at Pepperdine University were instructed to seek shelter.
According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, the intense heat of the fire is causing it to alter the wind patterns nearby, even pulling them right towards and into the fire itself. This warning was issued later in the day, as the fire had already engulfed an area bigger than five football fields.
Video clips, which were later shared, captured anxious Pepperdine students facing fires just steps away from the university’s library on Monday during the initial days of finals. Students hurriedly descended the stairs to evacuate the area, as they were worried by the intermittent flames.
