As everyone celebrates Diane Keaton and her incredible career, I’m excited to share that her hometown in California is planning a special tribute to honor her! It’s wonderful to see a community recognizing one of their own, and I think it’s a beautiful way to celebrate her legacy.
Oh my gosh, you guys, I was SO excited to hear that our amazing Mayor Amezcua announced they’re putting up a special sign near Santa Ana High! It’s to honor Diane Keaton, the incredible actress from *The Godfather*! I was devastated to hear she passed away on Saturday at 79, but this is such a perfect way to remember her and show how much she means to all of us here. It’s just… *perfect*.
Santa Ana is the main city for Orange County, located just south of Los Angeles, and is part of the larger Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Placing a sign near the high school would be a great way to honor Keaton, who graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1963.
In an interview with TMZ, Amezcua said she intended to end the next city council meeting by honoring Keaton.
The mayor wasn’t alone in trying to honor the memory of the Academy Award-winning celebrity; other Santa Ana city officials were involved as well.
Council Member David Penaloza said he and other city council members were working to have the Santa Ana Water Tower lit up at night as a tribute to her.
The famous water tower, officially recognized as a landmark, was built in 1928 and is easily seen by drivers traveling on the I-5 freeway.
City council members want to create a new memorial similar to the one previously made to honor the late Kobe Bryant.
Following the heartbreaking helicopter crash that took his life in January 2020, a 153-foot water tower was illuminated in Lakers purple each night as a tribute.
A similar purple-tinged tribute had honored Prince following his overdose death in 2016.
It’s not clear yet what colors would be best to honor Keaton.
Council Member Jessie Lope also told TMZ that the city council is considering officially recognizing Keaton with a special day of honor.
Apparently, to make this happen, a city council member needs to ask for the honorary day. Then, either a family member or close friend of Keaton’s would have to accept the official proclamation on her behalf.
It came out on Monday that Keaton’s most recent public appearance was at a big birthday party for her friend, Jack Nicholson.
She starred with her fellow Hollywood icon in 2003 Something’s Gotta Give.
Comic star Ed Begley Jr. told People that he last saw Keaton at the birthday bash.
I recently ran into Diane Keaton at Jack Nicholson’s birthday party, and honestly, it was just lovely to see her. It really brightened my day!
She’s both a talented actress and a lovely person. I had the chance to work with her as her brother in an HBO movie called Running Mates, alongside Ed Harris. I’m happy to have known her for so long.
Begley said he figured Nicholson was just as upset about the loss, but he didn’t want to presume to know how the actor was feeling.
