Dexter Sol Ansell (Egg) marks end of filming on new Game of Thrones spinoff

As a devoted fan of George R.R. Martin’s intricate and captivating world, I eagerly await the arrival of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” in 2025. With its lighter, more adventurous tone, this prequel series promises to be a refreshing change from the high-stakes drama we’ve come to expect from Westeros.

The final episode of House of the Dragon, HBO’s initial Game of Thrones prequel series, aired last month, and we won’t return to that world until 2026. But don’t worry, HBO still plans to bring us back to Westeros in 2025 with their new prequel series titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” this series is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” novellas, which follow a robust yet somewhat slow-witted knight named Dunk and his intelligent, diminutive squire Egg. These tales take place decades after the events depicted in “House of the Dragon” and before those in “Game of Thrones.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Peter Claffey will bring the character Dunk, also known as Ser Duncan the Tall, to life in our favorite series. Meanwhile, Egg, who is named partly due to his baldness, will be portrayed by the talented Dexter Sol Ansell. In fact, you can follow his exciting journey with the show on his Instagram! Here’s a video of Ansell getting his own shorn head, reminiscent of Egg’s iconic bald look:

Today, Ansell posted a video on his Instagram Stories, signaling the wrap-up of the first season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“. Give it a look!

Filming for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has been going on since June, which means it took approximately three months to complete. This is shorter than the filming period for a season of “House of the Dragon”, but as mentioned earlier, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is more compact in terms of production. It will only consist of six episodes.

The initial season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” will be based on the first novella in Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” series titled “The Hedge Knight.“. So far, two additional books have been released: “The Sworn Sword” and “The Mystery Knight”. While Martin has expressed his desire to write more, given that he’s been working on “The Winds of Winter” for 13 years, it might be wise not to hold your breath.

It remains uncertain if HBO has greenlit a second season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” as of now. However, I find it fascinating how George R.R. Martin hints at his potential return to Belfast, where the first season was shot with the phrase, “See you soon.” It could imply that he plans to go back, or alternatively, he might be addressing us viewers, suggesting that we’ll witness more adventures of Dunk and Egg in the near future.

The solution to that enigma is still pending, but “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” from HBO and Max is set to debut around 2025. The specific premiere date remains unspecified at this point.
