As a big fan of the Dexter world, I’m always eager for updates on Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection. Recently, some major casting announcements have been made, revealing who will be playing new characters in the show.
The recent announcements about the cast are positive, especially with so many well-known actors signing on to the crime drama. Their involvement confirms this is a high-quality project attracting top talent. However, some viewers are disappointed that so much information is being released, feeling it spoils the surprise. While the news generates buzz for Dexter: Resurrection Season 2, it also diminishes some of the intrigue. Historically, though, the show hasn’t focused on the killers themselves, but rather on Dexter’s ultimate defeat of them.
Dan Stevens Joins a Returning and New Cast Member for ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

Dan Stevens has been cast as The Five Borough Killer in Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection. This is the third major casting announcement for the new season. Previously, it was revealed that Brian Cox, famous for playing Logan Roy in Succession, will portray The New York Ripper, a mysterious killer referenced in Season 1 but never shown.
I was really excited to hear that Uma Thurman is coming back as Charley Brown! As fans know, she was Leon Prater’s main security person – the billionaire who, sadly, is no longer with us. It’s a bit of a mystery how they’ll bring her back into the story since we last saw her leaving New York to care for her mom, but it’s huge news because she’s one of the few people left who knows what Dexter’s been up to.
The Five Borough Killer wasn’t mentioned in the first season, but now we know his identity and some details about his crimes. Because he targets innocent people, he’s a strong possibility for someone Dexter would add to his kill table. He also operates in a way that’s reminiscent of the Zodiac Killer, getting a disturbing pleasure from contacting the police to mock them and challenge them to stop him.
In Season 1, Detective Claudia suggests the current killer might be taking cues from The New York Ripper. It’s possible The Five Borough Killer is either directly learning from, or inspired by, this infamous criminal. While The New York Ripper hasn’t been active recently – he’s only been contacting the families of his past victims – it’s unclear if that’s enough to satisfy him. Could he be guiding a new killer, shaping them to be like himself?
Dan Stevens is a British actor who’s known for playing a wide variety of characters. He’s appeared in popular shows like Downton Abbey and the live-action Beauty and the Beast (where he famously played the Beast), as well as Legion. More recently, he’s been in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Cuckoo, and The Ritual. He also played Evan Green in the Netflix series Zero Day, a strong-willed political commentator who often challenged Robert De Niro’s character.
Actor Stevens is poised to become a standout this season, taking on a particularly complex and shadowy role – perhaps the darkest of his career so far. He’s continuing to explore these types of characters with an upcoming appearance in the third season of The Terror, which returns to AMC in May 2026 after a seven-year break. In the series, Stevens plays Pepper, a man wrongly committed to a psychiatric hospital.
The ‘Dexter: Resurrection’ Killer Reveals Might Be a Strategy

It seems intentional that the show is revealing major killer identities – first Cox as The New York Ripper, then Thurman’s return, and now Stevens as a new threat – before the second season of Dexter: Resurrection comes out. Some might think these reveals are happening too close together, but they definitely create buzz. The show is bringing back well-known actors, and that’s bound to get people interested.
Adding to the intrigue, people are drawing parallels between Stevens’ character and the infamous Zodiac Killer. The show seems to be building Dexter’s reputation as the greatest fictional serial killer in television history.
When Cox was revealed as the long-running killer, viewers immediately drew comparisons to the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow) from Dexter Season 4, often considered the show’s strongest season. Like Trinity, The New York Ripper has been operating secretly for years, making him arguably the most formidable opponent Dexter has ever faced.
The emergence of The Five Borough Killer creates tension because his crimes are precisely the kind that would deeply anger Dexter. By taunting the police – Dexter’s former colleagues – this killer will likely become Dexter’s next target.
Stevens’ Casting Builds Excitement for ‘Dexter: Resurrection’

The appeal of Dexter isn’t about solving a mystery of ‘who did it’ – you learn that information early on. The show focuses on Dexter’s process: how he carefully approaches potential victims, confirms they’ve done wrong, and operates in secret. Knowing Dexter’s identity and actions actually enhances the story, making it more engaging rather than taking away from it.
In Season 1, we had a good idea of who Eric Stonestreet, Krysten Ritter, Neil Patrick Harris, and David Dastmalchian would be playing before the show even started. We knew they were cast as killers and had some sense of their characters and nicknames. But even with that knowledge, the show still managed to develop those characters in surprising ways, and Dexter: Resurrection still had plenty of shocking twists and turns when the episodes were released.
The recent casting news suggests the show will reveal Dexter’s kill list to the audience, too. The story isn’t focused on Dexter figuring out who the killers are – he usually identifies them pretty fast. It’s all about the chase itself. Knowing the killer’s identity doesn’t diminish the excitement of watching Dexter hunt them down.
Dexter is now up against a much greater threat. Unlike the simple criminals he usually dealt with in Miami, these new killers are highly intelligent and calculating – almost as clever as Dexter himself. They don’t just kill; they enjoy taunting others with their crimes. Like Trinity, who nearly exposed Dexter’s secret life, these two new adversaries seem to relish provoking a reaction, and they could prove to be his most challenging opponents yet.
The latest news suggests that Season 2 of Dexter: Resurrection will further establish Dexter as a formidable and terrifying killer – someone you definitely don’t want to mess with, as the Gemini Killer discovered in Season 1. With Clyde Phillips back as showrunner, we have good reason to be optimistic. We already know Dexter’s ultimate fate, so the real enjoyment comes from watching his journey and the sacrifices he makes to reach that point.
