Devastated David Walliams admits he won’t be spending this Christmas with his son Alfred, 12, and explored his sadness in his new children’s book

David Walliams shared that he’ll be spending Christmas away from his son this year, and he’s understandably upset about it.

The comedian, 54, spoke candidly as he co-parents his son Alfred, 12, with his ex-wife Lara Stone.

David and Lara divorced in 2015 after a five-year marriage, during which they welcomed their son.

David sadly announced he won’t be able to spend Christmas with his son, Alfred, this year. Although they share custody, it’s Lara’s turn to have Alfred for the holiday.

The actor known for Little Britain recently revealed that his new children’s book, Santa and Son, was a way for him to process feelings of sadness.

The story follows Elvis, a boy being raised by his mother. His father is a retired and rather grumpy Santa Claus.

A bond is struck when they meet and have an adventure together.

I was chatting with Mike Hosking recently, and we discussed my book. One of the characters is a bit of a flawed father, and it really got us talking about the challenges faced by parents, especially those who are separated. It’s a theme that definitely resonates throughout the story.

I was just reflecting on how difficult it can be for parents to not have their children with them during the holidays, especially Christmas.

Ugh, Christmas. Everyone says it’s supposed to be all joy and happiness, and honestly, I want to feel that, I really do. But there’s always this…sadness that just kind of slips in, you know? It’s like, even when you’re trying to be cheerful, a little bit of melancholy just creeps up on you. It gets to me every year, and I can’t explain it!

David also mentioned he’s planning a trip to the Maldives with Alfred before the wedding, and he’s really excited about it.

David and Lara, married at Claridge’s hotel in 2010, finalized their divorce very quickly – the court hearing lasted only a minute. They were granted a decree nisi, which is a first step towards a final divorce.

Last year David said how Alfred had left him ‘weeping’ when he did ‘the sweetest thing’.

He shared a heartwarming story on Chris Evans’ radio show, recalling the day his child was born. He often tells his child that the day of their birth was the happiest of his life, and that each day since has been even more joyful.

David went on to say that everyone has an off day now and then, but that wasn’t the main issue. He explained that things were progressing well, and the other person had done something really kind.

David remembered planning a trip to Disney World with his son. He recalled saying, “Let’s look at the map and decide what we want to do,” and adding, “I think you’re really going to enjoy this.”

Honestly, when he said, “Of course I’m going to have fun, daddy, I’m going to be with you,” it just completely shattered me. It was such a sweet thing to say, but knowing why he said it… it was devastating. I keep replaying it in my head, and it still breaks my heart every single time.

David explained it was heartbreaking because people sometimes say unintentionally sad things, but those words can still be touching and innocent, making you cry.
