Despite many requests, Yakuza’s Kiryu has never been fighting game DLC

As a long-time fan of the Yakuza series, I’ve always dreamt of seeing Kiryu Kazuma and his fellow gangsters stepping into the ring for a brawl in Tekken or Street Fighter. The series has been a significant part of my gaming life, providing me with countless hours of immersive storytelling and brutal beat-’em-up action.

Over the past few years, as a devoted fan of Sega’s Like A Dragon games (previously known as Yakuza in the West), I’ve found myself eagerly wishing for characters like Kiryu Kazuma and Majima Goro to make an appearance in popular fighting games such as Tekken or Street Fighter. However, their former producer, Toshihiro Nagoshi, had often brushed off this idea, stating that he wasn’t keen on the image of Kiryu engaging in fights involving women, expressing his sentiment as, “I’m not particularly fond of the idea of Kiryu striking women.”

Masayoshi Yokoyama, the new producer and writer of the Like A Dragon series, who replaced Nagoshi in 2021, encourages us to envision grander ideas: Embrace a more expansive perspective.

During my chat with Yokoyama concerning the approaching Prime Video series inspired by the games titled “Like A Dragon: Yakuza,” I inquired about his thoughts on characters such as Kiryu, Majima, or Ichiban appearing in a potential fighting game like “Tekken 8.”

Yokoyama stated that instead of moving directly into another game, it’s more advantageous to explore different platforms, such as what we did with the [Like A Dragon: Yakuza] TV series. We often receive invitations to join other games, but we’ve never knocked on their door asking to participate. I believe venturing across various mediums is a wiser approach for us.

It’s clear that the response you received is significantly broader and more daring compared to what Nagoshi provided to Red Bull in 2020. Perhaps one day, Kiryu might find himself squaring off against Kazuya Mishima in an unexpected location like a Waffle House.

Back in 2011, I, Kiryu from Like A Dragon, stepped out of the Yakuza world to hit some golf balls in Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational. Later on, I teamed up with other Sega legends in games like Project X Zone 2 and Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight. More recently, I even rolled around in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania! It’s always a treat to step out of my usual world and play with friends from different franchises.

It seems to me that what’s missing is a long-awaited sequel of “Fighters Megamix 2” by Sega, which would allow us to experience the thrill of battling as the Dragon of Dojima against characters like the car from “Daytona USA”, Bean the Dynamite from “Sonic Fighters”, and any other opponent that Kiryu feels confident enough to fight.
