Despicable Me 4 forgets Minions are delicious spice, not a main course

As a gamer and a long-time fan of the Despicable Me franchise, I’ve seen my fair share of Minion mayhem, from their chaotic antics in the movies to the endless memes and merchandise that flood social media. And while some people can’t get enough of those yellow, gibberish-spewing creatures, others, like me, appreciate them in moderation.

In “Despicable Me 4,” there’s a hilarious Minion moment that continuously amuses me. It’s an uncomplicated yet endlessly entertaining scene. One of Gru’s Minions becomes trapped in a vending machine and can’t find a way to free himself. The situation persists throughout the film, leaving him stranded in the background while other events unfold. He spends his time snoozing on piles of chips or engrossed in a book titled “The Vending Machine Diet.” Despite all the mischief happening around him, this Minion remains stuck, unable to progress beyond the confines of the vending machine glass.

It’s amusing, yet this experience made me understand that despite the fact that Minion-filled scenes can sometimes turn into bothersome babble, there exists a proper method to incorporate them. A perfect balance of Minion antics is essential to distribute among other sequences – a sort of optimal ratio. Initially, Minions occupied a minor role in the 2010 “Despicable Me,” but they have surpassed the former antagonist Gru and his family in popular culture. However, by focusing primarily on them, we risk overlooking their true purpose.

In the Despicable Me series, the films excel at combining story and humor when filmmakers judiciously incorporate the Minions without flooding scenes with them. Although the vending machine joke in Despicable Me 4 is a standout comedic moment, it’s not the sole instance of Minion antics in the movie. Quite the contrary.

The unpredictable yellow creatures, or Minions, spark intense reactions. While some adore them to the point of purchasing exclusive merchandise and creating intricate meme collections, others harbor strong disdain, vehemently rejecting any Despicable Me production. I once shared the latter sentiment, but a long-standing inside joke with a friend has softened my stance towards these goggles-wearing beings. However, they don’t rank high on my list of favorites in the Despicable Me series, which truly shine when exploring the quirky universe of villainy as a career choice.

The continuous running gag brilliantly underscored the hilarity of the Minions when they weren’t the central figures in the scenes. I couldn’t help but chuckle when Gru utilized his tiny henchmen as a diaper-changing pit crew for Gru Jr., working with fervor and precision, reminiscent of changing tires on a race car. These jokes are effective due to their presence in the background of larger scenes, enhancing the humor by introducing another layer of quirky and amusing elements to an already whimsical universe.

In your writing, consider expressing it this way: “Scenes consisting exclusively of Minions lack sufficient distinction from other less exaggerated characters. The monotony of all-Minion sequences can be compared to the irritating result when two volume-enhancing mimic applications merge, producing a chaotic symphony of simple statements. Minions, due to their limited capacity for subtlety and diversity, struggle to sustain a scene on their own.”

In the upcoming film “Despicable Me 4,” a multitude of Minions not confined to vending machines or acting as Gru’s (Steve Carell) and Lucy’s (Kristen Wiig) pit-stop team embark on a bus journey to the Anti-Villain League headquarters. Their chaotic behavior, filled with bubble-blowing and impromptu celebrations, disturbs the bus driver, who attempts to regain control. However, the unruly horde of Minions soon overpowers him, surging towards the building in a relentless wave. This lengthy sequence portrays the Minions as an indistinguishable mass, spewing nonsensical phrases with no individuality or defining characteristics. Despite the filmmakers’ efforts to make this concept strange and engaging, it ultimately results in a tedious experience, lacking surprise or intrigue when the Minions transform into a single, undifferentiated, yellow mass.

Scenes featuring the Minions contribute significantly to their less-than-favorable image. Their two spin-off films predominantly focus on their interactions with one another. After witnessing numerous scenes of their high-pitched voices, playful cruelty towards each other, and reckless behavior, it becomes challenging to recall that they can be intriguing and unpredictable when given distinct personalities or used to complement the main characters. Minions can indeed enhance otherwise dull movie moments with their unique charm. However, excessive use of them can overshadow even a decent film with their overly sweet influence. Given how frequently Minion-centric scenes dominate the Despicable Me series, it’s simple to overlook the positive impact that a moderate amount of Minion antics can have on one’s mood.

Despicable Me 4 is out in theaters now.
