Desperate Housewives” Back to Life with “Wisteria Lane

The classic show “Desperate Housewives” will have some fresh next-door neighbors, in a sense. Kerry Washington and Natalie Chaidez, known for “The Flight Attendant,” are reviving the iconic ABC series under Disney’s Onyx Collective banner. Named “Wisteria Lane,” this new show pays homage to the original’s famous neighborhood, and it will offer a fresh take on the lives of several families residing there, just like before, but with a modern twist on the shocking and intriguingly mysterious events that unfolded.

The initial news, initially broken by Deadline, doesn’t come as a shock given that the ABC series celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024. While Washington isn’t part of this specific project, the enduring popularity of the show through streaming, combined with Cherry’s past statements about revisiting Wisteria Lane, makes it a fitting candidate for revival in an era marked by changing social norms but no less drama. However, there’s been no confirmation yet whether Washington will have any role in the series. Given her current production commitments, it seems like this project could go either way. But honestly, wouldn’t it be exciting to see Kerry Washington portray a character similar to Kaley Cuoco’s on The Flight Attendant?

According to Deadline:

The quaint neighborhood of ‘Wisteria Lane’ is characterized as a lively, tantalizingly humorous drama or mystery, similar to the style of ‘Desperate Housewives’. This setting features an assortment of distinct friends and acquaintances who share a tranquil cul-de-sac known as “Wisteria Lane”. At first glance, the residents of Wisteria seem to be living their ideal lives: stunning houses, harmonious families, and luxurious SUVs parked in driveways. However, beneath those charming picket fences and cheerful social media posts lie concealed SECRETS.

A ‘Desperate Housewives’ Reboot Just Makes Sense Right Now, You Know?

In simpler terms, the TV series “Desperate Housewives,” which spanned eight seasons, featured Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross, and Nicollette Sheridan as the main characters – at least for the first five seasons (her departure was quite significant). These women portrayed housewives who were the central figures in the show. The story unfolds as they start to uncover a series of puzzling mysteries and hidden truths following the demise of their neighbor and friend, Mary Alice Young.

Drawing at least partial inspiration from the Andrea Yates trial, “Desperate Housewives” offers a vibrant canvas for character development and intensifying the domestic drama of individuals. Given the persistent (and some might say, renewed) fascination with series/properties like Bravo’s Real Housewives franchise – which was itself inspired by the widespread appeal of the Cherry show – it seems fitting to either reboot or reinvent “Desperate Housewives” now. The rise of platforms like social media has significantly amplified the potential for drama since the series’ 2004 debut.

With figures such as Washington and Chaidez (and the invitation extended to Cherry to join in, which is thoughtful!), we are assured that this latest version of the famous street will deliver the captivating drama on TV that we can’t help but yearn for secretly.
