Designer Bella Freud’s Shocking Near Miss with Dad’s Bentley at Just Eight!

As a devoted admirer, I can share an intriguing tale from my personal experiences. Once upon a time, I narrowly avoided a mishap involving the iconic Bentley belonging to my esteemed father, Lucian Freud.

She was only eight years old when she decided to ‘go for a drive’ in the artist’s parked car.

Taking to her Instagram Story, Bella reminisced on her near miss and how Freud saved her. 

In my own words, I’d say: “Popped by for a quick spell, Dad did, all the way from London in his sleek, dark-blue Bentley.

While conversing with Penny Cuthbertson, her friend and source of inspiration, Bella seized the moment.

She clarified: “Everything seemed straightforward. The car was parked by the roadside, so I hopped into the driver’s compartment, released the parking brake, and got going.

Initially, the vehicle began moving towards a trench. All of a sudden, Dad jumped in next to me and shoved me aside using his own body, effectively halting the car by pulling up on the emergency brake as it started to descend rapidly.

Yet her father luckily wasn’t angry with her antics after the lucky escape. 

She added: ‘He didn’t chastise me. He only said unsmilingly “You must be careful”.’

Bella’s dad, Lucian, is known to have had at least 14 kids from multiple women. A friend even suggested that it’s possible he could have fathered up to 40 children.

Three of his daughters were born in the same year after the result of multiple affairs. 

Lucian handed over Bella and her sibling Ester to Bernadine Coverley, who had Bella at the tender age of 18.

In 1960-61, Bella’s birth was depicted in a painting titled “Pregnant Girl,” which was created by Freud.

Sadly, Bella mourned the loss of both her parents, who had sadly passed away only a few days apart from each other. This double tragedy occurred in July 2011, with her mother passing on the same month as the renowned artist’s demise.

She wrote at the time: ‘My beloved father died last week on Wednesday, July 20. He was 88.

In my youth, I could bring tears to my eyes in just three seconds upon contemplating his loss. Though I’ll carry the sorrow of missing him throughout my life, it appears justifiable that he departed.

The greatest surprise was my mother, Bernardine, passing away just four days after my father, at the young age of 68.” This maintains the original meaning while making it more natural and easier to read.

She entered Ipswich Hospital, feeling pain, only to learn that her cancer had progressed significantly.

About a week after being informed that she only had a week left, she passed away 13 days following her admission. While she could still talk, I wept in her embrace as she lay in the hospital bed.

In the year 1948, Lucian was married to Kitty Garman, who was the daughter of renowned sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein, and they had two daughters together named Annie and Annabel.

Later on, he fathered five kids with Suzy Boyt, a past student of Freud’s at the Slade School of Fine Art in London, who was depicted in one of Freud’s paintings titled “Woman Smiling.

In the year 1957, Suzy welcomed her firstborn son, Alexander, into the world. After that, she had a total of five children, including the accomplished writer Rose Boyt, Isobel, another author named Susie Boyt, and their youngest brother, Kai.

During the same span of years, Freud additionally had four children with Katharine McAdam, a fashion student, while he occasionally attended life-drawing sessions at St Martin’s art college.
