Descendants: The Rise of Red gives a wonderful tribute to a departed star
As a fan, I was deeply moved by the way Disney chose to pay tribute to Cameron Boyce in “Descendants: The Rise of Red.” Boyce’s untimely passing left a big hole in the series, and it was important for Disney to acknowledge his contribution in a meaningful way.
I’m excited to share that in “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” not only do we have some fresh new tunes, but the storyline builds upon the existing series mythology. Additionally, there’s a touching homage paid to one of the original film’s beloved stars who tragically passed away.
Caution: This article contains mild SPOILERS for Descendants: The Rise of Red
In 2015, “Descendants” emerged as a major success for Disney Channel. The storyline revolves around Disney villains being banished to an island by the virtuous characters. The young prince of Beauty and the Beast is eager to enroll the offspring of some of these villains in Auradon Prep School. Initially encountering resistance, the foursome gradually transform into admirable individuals.
In the group, there was Carlos – Cruella DeVille’s son – with a surprising dislike and apprehension towards dogs. Despite having Dalmatian-esque hair and wardrobe, he was ironically opposed to them. His storyline revolved around escaping his domineering mother’s grip and transforming into a hero. Cameron Boyce brought Carlos to life for Disney Channel viewers, who recognized him from his role in the popular sitcom “Jessie.”
The film became successful with its catchy tunes, engaging performances, and led to the production of two follow-ups. Sadly, during the making of the third installment, titled “Descendants 3,” Boyce unexpectedly passed away at age 20 due to an epileptic seizure in July 2019. The movie was subsequently dedicated to his memory, and a charitable foundation was established in his honor.
In the upcoming film “Descendants: The Rise of Red,” Uma, portrayed by China Anne McClain, has taken over Auradon Prep and extended an invitation to the inhabitants of Wonderland. This decision sparks chaos as the Queen of Hearts, played by Rita Ora, sets her sights on ruling the fairy tale kingdom. In response, Red, Kylie Cantrall’s character, and Chloe, Malia Baker’s character, who is the daughter of Cinderella, travel back in time with the hope of persuading the younger Queen away from her wicked ways.
The film introduces fresh music and intriguing new characters, while also showcasing a moving tribute to Carlos and Boyce through an especially impactful scene.
How does Descendants pay tribute to Boyce?
In an interview with TV Line, executive producer Suzanne Todd revealed that the filmmaking team had long planned to include a tribute to the late Boyce. However, they faced the challenge of finding an appropriate way to implement this touching gesture.
We always knew that we wanted to pay some kind of tribute. We actually went through a number of different incarnations of what we thought was the best way to do it, because it’s very delicate and very important.
In the end, there is a heartfelt conversation between Uma and the Fairy Godmother (Melanie Paxson) in Uma’s office. The Fairy Godmother expresses concerns about Red. Uma shares her intention to offer a second chance to a struggling child, reminiscent of how someone once did the same for the villainous children from their past. As she speaks, Uma gazes at a portrait of Carlos on the wall, her eyes brimming with tears.
McClain and Boyce shared a deep emotional connection, having become friends during the filming of “Grown Ups” in 2010. Consequently, when portraying her feelings in that scene about Carlos’ passing, she drew upon her own experiences and emotions.
We, the filmmakers, had some ideas about what we wanted to do, but we also had a lot of conversations with China Anne and her family about it. She landed that moment so beautifully. And I have to say that the story point we ended up going with, about inclusion and ending this segregation in Carlos’ name, is so on point for our universe and what we’re trying to promote. The idea that we were attributing that to Carlos’ character felt 100% real and authentic.
Interested parties may note that the film introduces the characters of Mal (portrayed by Dove Cameron), Ben (Mitchell Hope), Evie (Sofia Carson), and Jay (Booboo Stewart). They are depicted sailing around the world in search of other wicked offspring, paving the way for potential sequels.
Speaking naturally and clearly,
