Derry Girls Stars Reunite for New Project at National Theatre

Nicola Coughlan expresses her enthusiasm after announcing that she will be working alongside one of her Derry Girls co-stars again on a new venture.

The 38-year-old actress, known for her role as Clare Devlin on Channel 4’s sitcom, is set to take the stage at the National Theatre in the upcoming production of “Playboy of the Western World.

And Siobhán McSweeney who played the iconic role of Sister Michael will be acting alongside her.

On her Instagram post on Tuesday, Nicola announced that she was reconnecting with an old acquaintance for a fresh experience embarking on an Irish traditional journey.

‘So excited to be bringing the Wesht of Ireland to the @nationaltheatre.’

Siobhán posted on her social media platforms with excitement, ‘At last, it’s time to unveil this secret! I feel incredibly lucky – happiest girl around.’

‘Thank you @nationaltheatre for allowing me back.’

The Three-Act Play titled “The Playboy of the Western World” was penned by the esteemed Irish author John Millington Synge and debuted on the stage of Dublin’s Abbey Theatre in 1907.

Pegeen Flaherty experiences a dramatic shift in her life when an unexpected visitor enters her pub one ordinary day, confessing to having murdered his father.

Instead of being rejected, Christy Mahon transforms into a beloved figure in the community. The murderer who charms his way into people’s hearts not only wins their favor but also participates in local races and integrates himself into village life. However, this peace is disrupted when another man unexpectedly appears on the scene…

Under the guidance of Caitríona McLaughlin, Artistic Director at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, we find Nicola, Éanna Hardwicke (from The Sixth Commandment), and Siobhán immersed in John’s tale of growing up and self-exploration.

Over the past week, I found myself beaming with joy alongside my partner, Jake Dunn, at our first joint appearance on the red carpet during the Bafta TV and Craft Awards nominees party. It was a night to remember!

As a devoted fan, I couldn’t help but notice that the actress and her on-screen partner from Renegade Nell, both of whom are just 25 years old, seemed incredibly smitten with one another when they stepped into London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Their eyes were locked almost constantly, suggesting a deep connection between them.

At night, Nicola exuded elegance in a fitted black jacket dress adorned with a striking tulle bow at the back that was hard to ignore.

She put on a layer of statement clothing over some black tights, followed by a tall pair of black platform shoes.

To complete her stylish outfit, the attractive woman carried her items using a compact satin mini-bag.

Instead, Jake chose a laid-back style when he emerged wearing a pair of white sneakers and a matching navy blazer-pant set.

He put on a burgundy wool sweater beneath his suit, leaving the top button of his white shirt undone.

In February, Nicola made their relationship Instagram-official by sharing a heartfelt birthday post on her Stories for Jake’s 25th birthday.

She shared a photo of Dunn sitting on what appears to be a set as he looked up at the sky.

“Happy Birthday ♥️,” she wrote on the post.

Nicola and Jake became acquainted, having been introduced through her Derry Girls co-star and good friend, Louisa Harland.

After keeping their blossoming romance under wraps for several months, Nicola and Jake made it official in October, as they were noticed leaving a pub in North London, holding hands.

Close associates of the pair shared with TopMob that they are deeply smitten with one another, and their shared enjoyment is palpable.

Regardless of their hectic calendars, they have seamlessly fit into one another’s lives because they possess an extensive circle of common friends.

In 2023, Jake, a graduate from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, has worked alongside Louisa Harland and Dylan Llewellyn (aged 32), who are known for their roles in Nicola’s Derry Girls series.

Similar to Nicola, another London-born actor has played roles in a historical series as well; specifically, they appeared in Disney’s Renegade Nell alongside Louisa.

According to the source, after Derry Girls concluded, Nicola, Dylan, and Louisa continued to be close friends who consistently backed one another’s careers. Given this bond, it was fitting that Nicola eventually crossed paths with Jake.

At drama school itself, Jake got cast for the Channel 4 series “Big Boys,” which starred Dylan and was penned by Jack Rooke, a good friend of Nicola’s.

This group of companions frequently backs one another’s endeavors and can often be found socializing in the hip North West London neighborhood, particularly around Nicola’s residence in the fashionable Stoke Newington district.
