Review: Netflix adaptation of ‘Dear White People’ mixes personal and political for best of both worlds
In the engaging new Netflix sitcom titled “Dear White People,” created by Justin Simien, the original 2014 film about the experiences of black students in a predominantly white Ivy League institution has been expanded into a 10-episode series.
Initially, I’d like to express gratitude towards God for shielding and guiding me through this predicament, as well as numerous others. This message was posted on Instagram with a location tag in Los Angeles. A special thanks goes out to everyone who reached out to check on me, particularly my family and friends. You all are truly cherished. Getting shot just before Christmas wasn’t part of my plans… but life sometimes takes unexpected turns.
Horton stated that the attacker fired a shot at him through a vehicle, which hit his left arm and caused it to fracture severely. He also mentioned that fragments from the bullet shattered various things. Additionally, he expressed gratitude for not being in a grave or paralyzed, indicating that he has been discharged from the hospital and is recuperating with a metal plate and screws in his arm. Despite his frustration over not being able to exercise, he acknowledged that his circumstances could have turned out far more dire.
He expressed, “I don’t require any sympathy as I’m about to bounce back quickly; I feel fantastic… Just a friendly reminder to everyone, including myself, to always prioritize God. Stay vigilant and grateful for all the blessings. The devil cannot hinder us when we walk with God.
In a hospital setting, the actor shared pictures showing him lying in a bed with a cast on his left arm. These images were accompanied by graphic depictions of his wound, an X-ray, several stitches running along his forearm, and photographs of the shattered car window he claimed was where he was shot from.
On Friday, Horton declined to clarify if officials had intervened in the event, and he didn’t provide a response to The Times’ query for a comment at that time.
In “Dear White People,” Tyler James Williams, who was the original Lionel in the 2014 Sundance film of the same name, was replaced by Horton in the Netflix adaptation that debuted in 2017. The story continued from the movie with a mostly identical cast, and Logan Browning took over the lead role from Tessa Thompson. Over four seasons, the show ran until 2021 with Horton and Browning leading the cast.
In addition to his roles, Horton featured prominently in the 2017 film “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” alongside Denzel Washington. He has also made appearances on shows such as “American Vandal,” “American Horror Story,” “Drunk History,” and “Bad Hair.” His latest project is the AppleTV+ series “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” where he worked alongside Samuel L. Jackson.
