Derek Hough's wife Hayley Erbert makes 'special' return to 'DWTS' after brain injury

As I reflect on Derek Hough and Hayley Erbert’s heart-wrenching yet inspiring journey, I am left in awe of their indomitable spirit and resilience. Last year’s ordeal, which could have shattered many, has instead served as a testament to the power of love, determination, and dance.

This week, Derek Hough danced on “Dancing With the Stars” alongside his wife Hayley Erbert – an event he hadn’t anticipated would happen again.

Previously, Erbert experienced an emergency brain operation following a collapse on stage during a tour with Hough. Later that evening in the hospital, the multiple “DWTS” winner was informed by doctors that his wife, as she had been known to him, no longer existed.

In an interview with People magazine on Wednesday, Hough expressed that it wasn’t something he had even contemplated, such as “Oh, we’ll dance again.” Yet, here I am, and it’s astonishing. It’s almost impossible to express in words.

In their rendition of “Beautiful Things (Acoustic)” by Benson Boone, Hough and Erbert showcased both technical finesse and emotional release. Towards the end, they exchanged a kiss, then Hough stepped aside, allowing Erbert to soak up the limelight and the thunderous applause. With her hand over her heart, she graciously acknowledged the audience.

Prior to the concert on Tuesday evening, they broadcast a segment where Hough reflected upon the ordeal that occurred in December of last year.

Xochitl Gomez won the mirrorball trophy, and duo Hough and Erbert were in the middle of their Symphony of Dance tour when they experienced a heart-wrenching stoppage, as John Hough put it.

He reminisced that he was on stage, expecting her appearance when suddenly a stage manager informed him that Erbert was experiencing full seizures, essentially dying. They swiftly attended to the dancer, still in costume, and took her to the hospital where they learned she had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and urgently needed an operation.

According to him, the doctor indicated that there was a strong possibility she wouldn’t survive and if she did, she wouldn’t remain the same individual. Hough recollected being on the hospital floor, pleading fervently. He said, “Don’t leave me,” as if imploring her not to depart.

The day following Erbert’s emergency craniectomy, a procedure involving the removal of a portion of the skull by a surgeon to alleviate pressure, she appeared drastically altered, having lost approximately 40% of her skull as Hough described. However, he felt a sense of relief when his wife recollected their previous dance before the occurrence.

Towards the end of that month, Erbert had a cranioplasty procedure. This surgery, as explained by the National Library of Medicine, serves to fix openings or gaps in the skull for both aesthetic and practical purposes. It’s typically carried out following traumatic injuries.

In the segment, Ebert was informed that there was a possibility she wouldn’t be able to walk anymore. Yet, true to her spirit, she was back in the dance studio by March and received medical approval to rejoin the tour in April. (Or) During the segment, Ebert was told she might not walk again, but as always, she proved to be resilient. By March, she was back in the dance studio and received clearance to resume the tour in April.

Watching the segment Tuesday night, Erbert told People she was “flooded with emotions.”

In conversation with People, Erbert shared, “When they played the recording, that’s when I began feeling overwhelmed because truth be told, I hadn’t watched much of it for quite a while.” She continued, explaining her efforts on recovery, “Going back to those moments, I was simply inundated with emotions, but being here was incredibly unique and memorable.

The dancer, who just celebrated her 30th birthday, added that she is learning to listen to her body and gauge when “something’s off.”

Hough emphasized that he is extremely cautious when it comes to ensuring her safety and security in everything we do. He added that their ‘DWTS’ appearance was just a glimpse into the complete narrative they are planning to share.

Announcing on Tuesday, they shared that their endeavor would persist, and it includes the creation of a documentary. This documentary is to be helmed by Jason Bergh, known for “The Greatest Love Story Never Told”, and co-produced by Bergh and Stephan Bielecki.
