Derek Hough spent $8K on his cat’s Christmas Day health scare

On Christmas Day, it was disclosed by Derek Hough that his feline companion, Otis, experienced a health emergency, which ultimately required $8,000 in treatment.

39-year-old Dancing with the Stars judge, formerly a pro dancer on the show, shared the announcement via Instagram.

With his holiday sleepwear still on, Derek stood, cradling both Otis and a bag from Antech Diagnostics veterinary lab, in one hand.

He added an animation of a curvy arrow pointing at the bag, attached to the number: ‘$8000,’ indicating the cost of the treatment.

‘Look what I got for Christmas,’ he wrote. ‘A plastic bag filled with stuff Otis ate and had to be removed from his stomach costing $8000 ! Yay! Glad he’s ok.’

A multitude of fans and acquaintances swamped his comment section, with Dancing with the Stars professional Maxim Chmerkovskiy among them, posting: “Oh no!!! At least he’s safe!

English ballroom dancer Shirley Ballas, mother of former Dancing with the Stars professional Mark Ballas, expressed concern for a sick cat by saying, ‘Oh my goodness, I genuinely hope the cat recovers well.’

Derek and his partner Hayley Erbert (another professional from Dancing With The Stars) cohabit with no fewer than four additional pets: the dogs named Romi and Luna, as well as the cats Palo and Lily.

A year ago, I was on tenterhooks, watching over Hayley as she faced an unexpected ordeal – emergency surgery to rid her of a cranial hematoma that demanded the removal of a portion of her skull during the festive season.

Last week on Dancing With The Stars, Derek emotionally recounted the terrifying day when he thought he might lose his wife.

He recalled that he was standing on the stage, expecting her to appear, when suddenly the stage manager emerged and announced, “I’m sorry, she won’t be joining us on stage.” Unfortunately, she was at the side of the stage suffering from severe seizures, essentially close to death. It’s almost impossible to describe the overwhelming feeling other than sheer terror.

Hurriedly, we took her to the hospital, with her costume still on. A doctor approached me then, saying, “She’s suffering from a critical brain hemorrhage; therefore, we must perform surgery immediately.

In a heart-wrenching manner, Derek shared: ‘He told me there’s a chance she may not survive, and if she does, she won’t be the same individual.’

Upon waking up, I found myself puzzled and devoid of any recollection of my recent seizures. Yet, Derek was there to fill in the gaps, sharing with me his words: “You asked, ‘What occurred? Aren’t we just dancing?’

He shared: ‘I can’t even tell you, just knowing that she was there, she was in there, the relief I felt. She was Hayley. She was my wife. And then the journey began.’

The doctor shared the grim news that Hayley might be unable to walk ever again, yet this sparked a fire within her. Labeling herself as ‘stubborn,’ Hayley made up her mind not just to walk, but even more so to dance.

In striving for her objective, she exerted every ounce of her strength, and this season, she emotionally returned to Dancing With The Stars alongside her spouse, giving a heartfelt performance.
