In a surprising admission, Denzel Washington openly admitted that he doesn’t identify himself as a typical ‘Hollywood‘ celebrity in reference to his distinguished acting career.

The veteran in the entertainment industry, who hails from Mt. Vernon and has recently been praised online, playfully said: “I consider myself a ‘Mt. Vernon actor’ rather than a ‘Hollywood actor,’ reflecting my roots back home.

In an interview on CBS’ Sunday Morning, 70-year-old John Q. expressed, “I’m not sure about the meaning of ‘Hollywood’.

Denzel, the current star of the latest Broadway performance of Shakespeare’s Othello together with Jake Gyllenhaal, mentioned that he primarily identifies as a theater actor.

As a thespian with a passion for both theater and film, allow me to clarify my journey: I started on the stage, honing my acting skills under the bright lights of the proscenium arch. Film came later in my career. I didn’t learn to act through movies; instead, I was educated in the art of performance on the stage. To me, film is a medium for directors and cinematographers, while the stage has always been my canvas as an actor.

“Once it’s performed, both you and the character vanish, and edits, music, and other elements are added to it. Essentially, theater is a platform for actors. The stage opens, and from that moment on, there’s no one left to assist you.

The new Othello play opened on Sunday, March 23 and stars Washington in the titular role.

James Earl Jones was the last actor to play the role when he starred in the 1982 revival. 

During my college years, James Earl Jones served as a guiding light for me. He was the person I aspired to be. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to watch his performance of Othello, but I believe mine at 22 surpassed it. However, now it’s my time to shine.

He realized, ‘It appears their relationship is deeply connected, as if they share a special bond. He loves excessively, more than he should.’

And he gushed, ‘I haven’t been this excited about anything I’ve done as I am about this.’ 

Othello will play at Barrymore Theatre through Sunday, June 8. 

In February, Denzel shared that he had a close call with losing his tongue not too long ago, which has been impacting his professional endeavors.

As I chatted up with the New York Times, I admitted my tongue had ballooned a bit, causing me some trouble in clearly articulating certain phrases.

The celebrity expressed, “Where should I go to respond to your request? My tongue is swollen, making it difficult, and it’s affecting me in every way,” they revealed.

As I almost bit my tongue during an intense moment, I took a pause to ponder over my spiritual bond with the Almighty, much like the character I played in Gladiator II.

Every day, I take a moment to connect and express my thoughts to the higher power, saying something along the lines of: “Here I am, Lord. If this is your will for me, I’m ready to follow.

It’s somewhat unclear to me what caused it, but it could be attributed to a random occurrence, luck, or even fate.
