Denzel Washington’s Forgotten War Epic Loses Streaming Home

Lots of new movies and shows are coming to the streaming service next month, but some titles will also be removed. This means viewers don’t have much time left to watch the historical film starring Denzel Washington and Morgan Freeman before it’s gone.

The movie Glory, released in 1989, will soon be leaving streaming services on June 1, 2026, so don’t miss your chance to watch it. It’s leaving alongside other films like Jamie Foxx’s Ray, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The LEGO Movie, and the Fifty Shades series (Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, and Fifty Shades Freed).

Glory Won Denzel Washington His First Oscar

Directed by Edward Zwick and written by Kevin Jarre, the film Glory tells the true story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the first African American units to fight for the Union Army during the Civil War. The movie, based on the books Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard, stars Denzel Washington, Morgan Freeman, and Andre Braugher as soldiers in the regiment, alongside Matthew Broderick as their commander, Robert Gould Shaw. Glory depicts the regiment’s journey culminating in their courageous attack on Fort Wagner in South Carolina.

The film Glory earned $27 million in theaters, exceeding its $18 million production budget. It received widespread critical acclaim, including five Academy Award nominations, and Denzel Washington won the Best Supporting Actor award at both the Oscars and Golden Globes. The film currently holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In recognition of its significance, Glory was added to the U.S. National Film Registry last year to ensure its preservation.

The Ensemble Cast of Glory Was Highly Praised

Looking back on the film after thirty years, Zwick admitted that, like any director, he still finds moments he’s not entirely happy with. However, he was especially impressed by the performances, particularly Morgan’s, and the strong teamwork among the actors. He realized, upon rewatching, how much the cast’s collaborative spirit and improvisations contributed to the film’s most important scenes, and that’s what really stands out to him now.

He also shared that Washington is incredibly dedicated to his work and truly enjoys the process. While the recognition was meaningful to him, the speaker remembers different aspects of Washington that were more impactful over time.

Glory is streaming on Netflix until June 1, 2026.
