Denzel Washington & Spike Lee’s New Film Breaks Records After 20-Year Hiatus!

In a remarkable comeback after almost two decades, the latest partnership between Denzel Washington and Spike Lee, titled Highest 2 Lowest, has been hailed as their most critically acclaimed film. This new Spike Lee production is a modern take on the legendary 1963 Akira Kurosawa movie, High and Low, widely regarded as one of the best movies ever made. The premiere of Highest 2 Lowest took place at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 19th, with a U.S. theatrical release by A24 scheduled for August 22, 2025. Subsequently, it will be available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+ from September 5, 2205.

The film “Highest 2 Lowest” has garnered praise from critics, achieving a commendable 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after its debut at Cannes. Notably, the esteemed filmmakers Washington and Lee have not collaborated since the 2006 American crime thriller “Inside Man,” which too received critical acclaim with an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Given that numerous notable films of Denzel Washington were helmed by Lee, the upcoming release of “Highest 2 Lowest” is particularly intriguing following its positive reception prior to its U.S. premiere.

Denzel Washington & Spike Lee’s Highest-Rated Movie Together Is Right Now Highest 2 Lowest

It Currently Has A Slightly Higher Rotten Tomatoes Score Than Malcolm X

Among the five films that Washington and Lee have collaborated on so far, “Highest 2 Lowest” currently holds the highest critical acclaim. At present, it boasts a 90% rating, edging out the previous top spot held by “Malcolm X,” which had an 89% score from Spike Lee films starring Denzel Washington. With only 31 reviews published at the time of writing, there’s potential for its overall score to change if future reviews are negative. However, if the current trend continues, “Highest 2 Lowest” could become Spike Lee and Washington’s most critically acclaimed collaboration to date in 2025.

Spike Lee Film RT Critic Score Box Office
Mo’ Better Blues (1990) 71% $16.2 million
Malcolm X (1992) 89% $48.16 million
He Got Game (1998) 80% $21.57 million
Inside Man (2006) 86% $186 million
Highest 2 Lowest (2025) 90% TBD

“Attending the Cannes Film Festival 2025, I shared some intriguing insights during a press conference: Highest 2 Lowest might just be my final project alongside the esteemed Denzel Washington. Whispers of his impending retirement from acting have been circulating for quite some time now.
“We’ve collaborated on five films thus far, and I can honestly say it has been an honor to contribute to this remarkable collection. This could very well be our swan song. He’s hinted at stepping away from the spotlight, but five movies together – that’s a formidable legacy, one that resonates with audiences.
“If this is indeed our last film together, it would undoubtedly secure our place among Hollywood’s most illustrious director-actor duos, standing shoulder to shoulder with the legendary Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese.”

Highest 2 Lowest Is Denzel Washington & Spike Lee’s First Movie Together In 20 Years.

It Should End Their Five-Movie Run On A High Note

In the past, Washington and Lee collaborated on the movie “Inside Man” over 20 years ago. However, it was Lee who directed John David Washington, Washington’s son, in the 2018 film “BlacKkKlansman”. This production brought Lee three of his five total Oscar nominations and marked his first-ever non-honorary win (Best Adapted Screenplay).

In addition to Jeffrey Wright, the cast of “Highest 2 Lowest” includes A$AP Rocky, known for his roles in “Dope” (2015) and “Zoolander 2” (2016), as well as Ice Spice making her big screen debut. Washington will portray David King, a music executive entangled in a kidnapping plot.

Highest 2 Lowest’s Record RT Score Makes The 20-Year Gap Worth It

It Also Has Inside Man’s Impressive Box Office Number To Aim For

Over the past two decades, there’s been quite a gap between their projects, but this just underscores the care they took in selecting the right project. Given their busy schedules, it makes sense that they needed time to focus on other ventures. If Highest 2 Lowest is indeed their final collaborative feature film, early responses indicate that they’re going out with a powerful impact.

It would be quite remarkable if “Highest 2 Lowest” can either match or surpass its current 90% Rotten Tomatoes score, and even more so if its box office earnings manage to top the $186 million of “Inside Man.” Additionally, since “Highest 2 Lowest” is Lee’s first directed feature in five years, it adds another reason for excitement as we eagerly await its release.
