Denzel Washington responds to Oscar buzz for Gladiator 2 performance
As a gamer with a vast collection of films, I’ve seen my fair share of cinematic masterpieces – and Gladiator was certainly one of them. The sequel, Gladiator II, has been a highly anticipated release for me, especially with Denzel Washington reprising his role as Macrinus.
Denzel Washington has been getting universal acclaim for his role as Macrinus in the long-awaited Gladiator II, leading to talk of potential awards nominations.
Should Washington receive an Oscar nomination, it signifies his tenth overall nomination spanning various categories. If he takes home the award, this would be his third win, following his victories in the Best Supporting Actor category for “Glory” and the Best Actor category for “Training Day.
However, the actor didn’t express a strong desire for a nomination personally when Digital Spy inquired about the early Oscar speculation surrounding Gladiator 2.
Washington expressed his joy for Ridley Scott, hoping he would be nominated. He finds it hard to believe that despite his impressive work, Scott has never won an award before.
Last night, I spent the final 20 minutes of a movie on IMAX, and let out exclamations such as “Wow, I didn’t recall that scene!”. It seemed like someone was trying to hush me, but the experience was thrilling, enjoyable, and satisfying; whatever additional benefits it brings are just a bonus.
“Awards, all that, it’s just gravy. And I like gravy, to answer your question.”
In the film “Gladiator 2”, Washington found himself collaborating with director Ridley Scott for a second time, following their previous project “American Gangster“. However, the scope and nature of these two films differed significantly, making each a distinct experience.
Initially, I didn’t focus on observing his performance, I had a role to play instead. What made this film distinct was its grandeur, much larger than what I had previously encountered, contrasting with it. It felt quite unlike ‘American Gangster’,” he mused.
This morning, my wife reminded me I had forgotten something. She mentioned that when Ridley phoned me earlier, he told me he had always wanted to collaborate with me – which he was well aware of his intentions. He immediately recognized my potential. In other words, ‘You’re someone on my list of aspirations.’
“American Gangster focused heavily on my character. Conversely, Gladiator primarily revolved around the protagonist, which meant there was less emphasis on my role or our group. Essentially, it was the story of the Gladiator.
Prior to the launch of the sequel, Paul Mescal shared his thoughts with Digital Spy on his decision to avoid watching the original film while preparing for the sequel’s shooting.
Gladiator II is out now in UK cinemas and is released in US cinemas on November 22.
