Denzel Washington gives the perfect response to Gladiator 2’s Oscars snub

Denzel Washington has addressed the fact that he wasn’t given an Oscar nod for his role in Gladiator II.

In the sequel directed by the renowned filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott, the esteemed thespian portrayed Macrinus, a wealthy arms dealer. His portrayal garnered much acclaim, as it seemed his choice to forego an accent proved effective.

Regardless of the favorable response to his performance, he wasn’t nominated for an acting award at either the Oscars, where he was thought to be a strong contender, or the BAFTAs, where he had never previously been recognized with a nomination.

However, the snub doesn’t seem to faze him. He shared with the New York Times that when he discovered he wasn’t nominated for an award, he was sitting there smiling, thinking to himself, “Look at me, working on ‘Othello’ on Broadway instead.

Really? I find that hard to believe. Gosh, I’m feeling quite disappointed. However, with my years of experience, I’m growing wiser, learning to speak less, and understanding more – and that’s truly inspiring.

It’s not new information, given that Washington previously stated to Digital Spy upon the movie’s release in November, that he was primarily hoping for Scott’s direction of the film to be recognized with a nomination (however, Gladiator II only received one nomination in total).

He expressed his hope that he would be nominated, as he couldn’t fathom that he hadn’t won before in the past.

Last night, I spent the final 20 minutes of the movie on an IMAX screen, letting out exclamations like ‘Wow, I didn’t remember that!’ Apparently someone tried to quiet me down, but the experience was thrilling, enjoyable, and satisfying, and whatever results from it is just a bonus.

“Awards, all that, it’s just gravy. And I like gravy, to answer your question.”
