Denzel Washington explains criticised Gladiator 2 accent
As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the anticipation for “Gladiator II” is palpable. Having grown up watching the original movie, I was thrilled to see Denzel Washington reprising his role in this much-awaited sequel.
In an interview, Denzel Washington clarified why he chose to speak with his native accent in “Gladiator II.” He stated that he preferred not to attempt an imitation which might not measure up.
In this rephrasing, let’s focus on maintaining the original meaning while using more common and easier-to-understand language:
Under the direction of Ridley Scott’s return, he recruited the aid of Washington, his previous collaborator on “American Gangster”, to portray Macrinus – a character who was once a slave and later became a significant player in Roman politics, striving for power with the ultimate goal of controlling Rome.
Despite being a North African native, the lead actor, Washington, will be portraying the character with his native American accent in the trailer of the historical epic. This choice was clarified by the star himself in an interview with Empire Magazine.
He asked, “So, where exactly are we?” Then he added, “I wonder, whose dialect is this? It seems strange. You might unintentionally mimic someone and wind up with an inaccurate portrayal of an African accent.
In one of his earlier interviews with Empire, Washington, who had been a long-time partner of Ridley’s brother Tony, discussed his reasons for getting involved in the project. He stated, “I don’t have many more movies left that genuinely pique my interest.
As a gamer, I draw constant inspiration from Ridley’s cinematic masterpieces. Our initial encounter left quite an impression, and here we are still collaborating. His enthusiasm for life and his upcoming projects is palpable – he’s a true inspiration. At 86, I can only aspire to feel as vibrant and passionate about my work as he does.
Apart from Mescal and Washington, “Gladiator II” also includes Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger in its cast. Notably, Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi rejoin the cast, reprising their characters Lucilla and Senator Gracchus from the initial movie.
Gladiator II will be released in cinemas on November 15 in the UK and November 22 in the US.
