The new Demon Slayer movie just broke a record in Japan. Here is everything you need to know.
It’s always delightful to learn that an anime show achieves impressive ratings and audience numbers. The surge in interest for anime content has led many to hop on the trend. Recently, the anime series Demon Slayer, which debuted in 2019, shattered a box office record in Japan.
Demon Slayer movie reaches 10 billion yen in box office sales in Japan
On July 18, 2025, the initial part of the Infinity Castle storyline from Demon Slayer was unveiled. This final chapter of the acclaimed anime series, Demon Slayer, is being divided into three films and will be rolled out in intervals over the coming years.
The recently released film, known as “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle – Part 1: Akaza Returns,” continues the storyline immediately following the ending of season four, approximately one year ago.

As a devoted moviegoer, I can’t help but share my excitement over the instant success of this film that’s been sweeping across Japanese cinemas! Earning nearly 2 billion yen, equivalent to around $13 million USD, within its initial release, it quickly took over the box office. To put it simply, it was the number one movie for two consecutive weekends! What truly sets this film apart is that it became the first in Japan’s history to reach an astounding 10 billion yen mark so swiftly. Truly a testament to its captivating storytelling and unparalleled appeal!
10 billion yen translates to approximately 67 million U.S. dollars, demonstrating the massive success of the movie. What’s astonishing is that this figure represents just the Japanese market, with the film set to premiere in the United States and Canada on September 12, 2025.
Are anime films making a comeback?
Except for films produced by Studio Ghibli, it’s rare to find anime movies in cinemas these days. Yet, it appears that an increasing number of productions are choosing to release their works in movie theaters.
These popular anime series like Jujutsu Kaisen, Attack on Titan, and Tokyo Ghoul have been compiled from several episodes to create movies that are currently being screened in cinemas worldwide.

The crazy part? Every single one did wild numbers at the box office.
As a gaming enthusiast, I’m blown away by this glimpse into the future of anime! It’s incredible to see so many series creatively finding ways to bring their content to the big screen. What sets Demon Slayer apart is that it’s among the pioneers, offering a full-fledged movie release instead of just compiling episodes into a feature film.
