Demi Moore is chic in a black pleated skirt as she joins costar Margaret Qualley at The Substance screening
As a connoisseur of cinema who has seen my fair share of body-horror masterpieces, I must say that The Substance seems to be a worthy addition to the genre. The intriguing premise, coupled with the impressive performances by Demi and Margaret, promises a rollercoaster ride for horror enthusiasts.
On Monday, Demi Moore stepped out in a chic, fuss-free black ensemble following the premiere of her latest movie, The Substance.
The 61-year-old actress visited New York City’s IFC Center for a question-and-answer session, which corresponded with the highly praised horror movie she was associated with.
In a meeting with her 29-year-old co-star, Margaret Qualley, who was stylishly dressed in a cardigan and skirt matching Demi’s outfit, Demi also welcomed a special extra guest – her charming little Chihuahua named Pilaf.
The model-turned-actress carried the tiny pooch in harm as she departed the screening.
Demi opted for a stylish Thom Browne outfit, consisting of a chic black sweater paired with a black cardigan that bore a narrow red, white, and black stripe beneath its button row.
Demi paired her cozy, fluffy sweater against a sleek, black midi skirt boasting wide, knee-length pleats.
She paired her ensemble with striking black derby brogues featuring a patterned Scotch grain surface, and she seemed to forgo socks while wearing these dress shoes.
Bruce Willis’s former spouse sported a sleek black handbag and stylish black aviator sunglasses with frames to match her dark, flowing hair, which fell gracefully over her shoulders.
Demi’s co-star, Margaret Qualley, echoed Demi’s fashion choices by donning a conservative navy cardigan, which she wore buttoned all the way up over a navy dress adorned with small polka dots.
In a carefree, messy bun, the actress from “The Poor Things” styled her dark tresses, and she accessorized with black stockings, rounding off her ensemble with sleek black loafers.
Demi and Margaret were readily available for a discussion about their recently released, critically praised horror satire titled “The Substance”.
In the movie, Demi takes on the lead role, a part skillfully crafted by French director Coralie Fargeat. Her character, Elisabeth Sparkle, is a past Oscar recipient who now thrives in television, running a well-liked aerobics program that she hosts.
However, at age 50, she is abruptly let go from her program. The television network, headed by flamboyant Dennis Quaid, aims for a more youthful host despite the show maintaining good ratings.
When Elisabeth discovers about a puzzling medicine known as The Substance which could keep her youthful, she seizes this chance eagerly.
A mysterious entity leads to the development of a secondary, youthful form within her (portrayed by Margaret). She can control this new body for a span of seven days, but afterwards, she needs to retreat back to her original body for a complete week’s rest before switching over once more.
Initially, Elisabeth’s younger counterpart becomes popular with the network and manages to revive her old show. However, Elizabeth later discovers that her younger self can only control her body for a week at a time, which leads to problematic, intensely uncomfortable consequences for Elizabeth as their swaps start to take a toll on her physical well-being.
The movie has been praised by movie enthusiasts as a reemergence of the body horror genre, which was initially developed by filmmakers such as David Cronenberg (The Fly, Videodrome), Brian Yuzna (Society) and Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, From Beyond).
In the film “The Substance”, Demi experiences numerous stunning body changes, and these roles have garnered some of the top praises in her acting career. On the other hand, Margaret has concluded an impressive series of critically-acclaimed performances, working with esteemed film directors known for their unique artistic vision.
The movie is notably graphic with violence, earning such a reputation that it was part of an international collaboration showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, where it recently took home the prize for Best Screenplay.
The movie has become a favorite among horror enthusiasts, but for those who were not expecting it, the abundance of gore and gruesome scenes have caused them distress or discomfort.
After gracing the stage at the 2024 Hamptons Film Festival on Sunday, Demi will make her way to the IFC center in Manhattan for a visit.
She was on hand to receive this year’s Career Achievement in Acting Award.
In her acceptance speech, Demi provided her followers with an update regarding the health status of her former spouse, Bruce Willis.
In recent months, I’ve had to step away from my career as an action star due to the challenging battle I face with Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and aphasia. These conditions have reportedly taken away my ability to express myself verbally, which has been quite difficult for me.
During a conversation moderated by Alina Cho, Moore expressed that he has mentioned this before: “The illness is simply what it is.” He added that true understanding and acceptance of its nature is crucial. However, regarding his current state, Moore emphasized that he remains steady.
