Demi Moore and Rita Ora are fans – and it’s helped keep Mark Wahlberg and supermodels in tip-top shape. Discover the cult trend in anti-ageing that’s taking Hollywood by storm

Cryotherapy, sometimes known as cold therapy, has long been linked to sports recovery.

It’s quickly becoming the latest wellness craze for younger-looking skin, with celebrities like Demi Moore and Rita Ora reportedly fans.

Let me tell you, this isn’t your typical spa day! We’re talking seriously cold temperatures – think below freezing – but it’s all about tapping into your body’s natural ability to heal and become stronger. It definitely takes courage, but the results are worth it!

Apparently, just three minutes in a super-cold, pod-like chamber – cooled to a frigid -140°C – can give you skin that looks like those of celebrities.

Demi Moore, star of “The Substance,” is a fan of cryotherapy, and Tom Cruise has also spoken positively about its health benefits.

Okay, so you will NOT believe this about Mark Wahlberg. I already thought he was amazing, but seriously? The man is *obsessed* with those three-minute ice plunges just like me! He actually has a whole cryo-chamber *in his house*! Can you even imagine? It’s just…goals. I need one now. He’s living my dream life, honestly.

And it seems the celeb-endorsed wellness hack is becoming popular Down Under.

The Australian cryotherapy market generated $5.6 million in revenue in 2024 and is forecast to grow to $10 million by 2030, as reported by Grand View Horizon research.

Joanna Lykouresis, CEO of Cryo Stay Young Australia, calls the growing popularity of cryotherapy – recently embraced by celebrities and now Australians – ‘the next step forward’ in wellness.

‘Cold plunges have become a self-care staple, but cryotherapy is the next evolution,’ she says.

Joanna, discussing her Australian clinics and their use of cryotherapy, explained that while the treatment is relatively new for anti-aging, it’s becoming increasingly popular.

When we launched our first studio, very few people were familiar with these types of treatments. However, we’ve seen a significant increase in interest and bookings over the past year.

I was so excited to hear that Rita Ora visited a wellness clinic in Rosebery, Sydney back in 2022! She said it completely refreshed her, and honestly, it sounds like exactly what she needed to feel amazing again.

The 31-year-old singer briefly stepped into a very cold cryotherapy chamber, and then relaxed while breathing in extra oxygen.

Rita, who went to the clinic with her husband Taika Waititi, posted videos showing her trying to warm up after using the cold therapy chamber.

Okay, you guys, I just got back from the most incredible experience! I spent some time at @bodywrl, and honestly, it was a total reset for my mind, body, and soul. I’m feeling completely rejuvenated and I seriously can’t recommend it enough. Thank you so much to the team there – it was truly amazing!

Cryotherapy is often described as a way of ‘tricking’ the body into thinking it has hypothermia.

When you experience stress, it essentially puts your body on high alert – what we often call ‘fight or flight’. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It causes a rush of helpful chemicals like epinephrine for energy, endorphins to manage pain, and even proteins that help calm inflammation. It’s your body’s natural way of preparing to deal with a challenge.

Okay, so it’s not like they’re *actually* freezing, but their brain totally gets tricked into thinking they are! It’s wild – like, the brain panics and immediately sends all the blood rushing to protect their core, you know? It’s such a fascinating response, honestly. I’ve read so much about it!

This, in turn, leads to an increase in both metabolism and energy.

People who use this treatment say it boosts collagen production, which can make skin look fuller and reduce the appearance of cellulite. It’s also believed to speed up metabolism and help burn as many as 800 calories during each session.

A recent study by Dr. Jacopo Fontana in Italy found that two weeks of cryotherapy – five sessions per week – led to a noticeable reduction in both waist size (a 5.6% decrease) and cholesterol levels (a 20.2% drop), according to the New York Post.

In contrast, a control group following the same diet and exercise plan, but without cryotherapy, experienced a 1.4 percent decrease in waist size and a 9.4 percent reduction in cholesterol levels.

It’s also reported to help with migraines, ease pain, lessen arthritis symptoms, and improve skin problems like dermatitis.

It’s also suggested this can improve mood and help with conditions like anxiety and depression, as well as support treatment for dementia and Alzheimer’s.
