Demi Moore has enjoyed a successful acting career lasting over four decades, starring in popular movies like St. Elmo’s Fire, Ghost, A Few Good Men, and her recent film, The Substance.
Before becoming a star and walking red carpets, she worked a few ordinary jobs to make ends meet.
The 62-year-old actress, who was nominated for an Oscar, discussed her recent work with Glamour magazine after being honored as one of their Women of the Year.
Oh my gosh, can you believe it? Even before she was famous, when she was just fourteen, she was already hustling! She wasn’t doing glamorous photoshoots or anything, though. She was working at a collection agency, actually calling people who owed money and trying to get them to pay up! It’s just… incredible to me that she’s done everything, even the tough stuff, to get where she is today. A total queen!
After that, the singer from New Mexico worked as a receptionist for a producer who worked under Aaron Spelling, the famous television producer behind Beverly Hills, 90210 and father of actress Tori Spelling.
The celebrated actress described her early experiences as ‘very humbling.’ She began her career as a model before getting her first major role on the soap opera General Hospital, where she played investigative reporter Jackie Templeton from 1982 to 1984.
For a magazine interview, Moore spoke with her ‘Substance’ co-star, Margaret Qualley. Thomas Whiteside was the photographer for the shoot.
Emma Heming Willis, who was formerly married to Bruce Willis, shared that her first job involved working on the phone at a debt collection agency.
I used to make phone calls to people who were behind on their payments. Because my voice was so deep, they assumed I was an adult, not a 14-year-old. I became independent and moved out of my family home when I was just 16.
Next she stepped it up a bit to earn bigger bucks.
Everyone always expects actors to start out waiting tables, but that wasn’t my path at all! I skipped the restaurant scene and went straight into office jobs – it was a totally different experience, as I recently shared. It really shaped me, honestly.
I started my career as a receptionist for an accounting firm, and later I worked at 20th Century Fox assisting a producer who collaborated with Aaron Spelling.
That experience really shifted my perspective. It was fascinating being in the Hollywood scene, but also feeling completely outside of it – incredibly grounding, actually. It gave me a really clear, objective view, and honestly, helped me realize that wasn’t where I wanted to build my long-term future. I knew I had bigger goals and a different path in mind.
She also talked her inspiration who eventually became a very famous actress.

Moore started his story by saying he met a young woman, only a few years his senior, who lived in the same building as her mother and himself.
I recall looking down from the balcony and seeing her by the pool. She was German, and completely at ease with herself. She had a natural confidence and was incredibly beautiful.
I didn’t really know what she was going through, but I admired it. We quickly became friends. She was fluent in English when speaking, but struggled with reading, so she’d ask me to read lines with her.
The actress explained that while practicing lines, she and a co-star, both growing up with single mothers in West Hollywood, worked through scenes together. Then, she mentioned, her co-star returned to Europe to film a screen test.
Nastassja Kinski, now 64, is the woman in the photo. She later became known for her roles in films like Cat People, Tess, and Maria’s Lovers.
Watching her leave, I realized I envied her self-assurance more than her career. It wasn’t about being an actress; it was about the comfortable way she carried herself, and that’s what inspired me to change my own path.
