Delilah S. Dawson to pick up Terry Brooks’ Shannara series
Legendary fantasy writer Terry Brooks, well-known for his long-running Shannara book collection, has released a new title today – Galaphile: The First Druids of Shannara. This is not just another installment in the series but also his last book ever to be published.
At Emerald City Comic Con 2025 this weekend, I was thrilled to hear Terry Brooks announce his retirement from writing. However, fear not, fans of the enchanting Shannara series, for Brooks is not abandoning ship. Rather, he’s gracefully passing the reins to another accomplished author – Delilah S. Dawson.
For over five decades and close to fifty novels, Brooks has spellbound audiences tale after tale. At the age of 81, he shared with his audience that after a whole year of attempting but failing to assemble another manuscript, he ultimately concluded that it was time to retire. And with a career as prosperous and unforgettable as his, he truly deserves this break.
Since 2012, Dawson has been consistently releasing books, novellas, short stories, and more – both originals and licensed works. Her portfolio includes contributions to Star Wars and other popular franchises, as well as numerous comic books. On Instagram, she announced that she and Brooks have a long-standing friendship, and given their connection, she seems ideal for continuing where Brooks may eventually step away.
She expressed her delight in collaborating with Brooks on the cherished series, writing that she couldn’t contain her excitement!
The Shannara series, initially published with its first novel in 1977, is an epic high fantasy journey taking place in a post-apocalyptic world where Earth’s inhabitants were wiped out eons ago. This expansive universe encompasses numerous series and numerous books, as well as several short stories focusing on various characters and different eras, and has even been transformed into a television show in 2016.
At the panel, Brooks displayed a mix of humor and emotion, expressing gratitude towards Dawson and his dedicated readers while also showing optimism about his upcoming retirement. It’s a rare privilege to have a career that keeps you working until your 80s, but saying goodbye can be both liberating and tinged with sadness. I wish him a peaceful retirement, yet I eagerly anticipate what Dawson might create within this universe in the years ahead.
