DeForest Kelley was not happy with original scene in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
As a seasoned Star Trek enthusiast with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the emotional depth displayed in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier is often overlooked due to its other flaws. However, one scene that truly resonates and stands out as one of the most impactful is the heart-wrenching flashback of Dr. Leonard McCoy’s struggle with his father’s impending demise.
As a passionate Star Trek fan, I must admit that Star Trek V: The Final Frontier had its share of challenges as a blockbuster movie. However, it undeniably left an indelible impression on viewers, with scenes that continued to resonate long after the closing credits. One such scene that stands out is when Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, brilliantly portrayed by Deforest Kelley, confronts his past in a poignant flashback as he witnesses his father’s final moments.
1. Since his father was experiencing intense pain and Bones couldn’t ease it, he decided to remove his father from life support. At first, Kelley hesitated, but ultimately William Shatter, who played the starring role and directed the scene, persuaded him that this was one of the most impactful scenes he would perform.
The book “Captains’ Logs: The Authorized Complete Star Trek Voyages” by Edward Gross and Mark A. Altman reveals the events that culminated in Kelley agreeing to portray the scene, as well as the persuasive measures used to convince him to do so.
I said, ‘De, this is the best scene you’ve had to play in a long time.’ He’s such a wonderful actor, and I really felt he hadn’t had a chance recently to show what he was capable of doing. Finally, after much talking, I convinced him to do it. His one stipulation was that we add an explanation of why McCoy committed the euthanasia.
In a particularly moving moment during the scene, the explanation given turned out to be profound. When asked why he had taken this action, McCoy replied it was to maintain his dignity. This response carries a powerful impact even now, as people universally seek a dignified end to life. Interestingly, the creators of Star Trek may not have realized that this scene would become significant for those grappling with terminal illnesses, underscoring yet again how visionary and forward-thinking Star Trek has been throughout its history.
